Joris. Put simply, I don't have $2,500 for old or $5,000 for new

Might be best to save your coins until you can get some known good ones locally from a trusted source. Cheap isn't necessarily the least expensive. I would hate to see you buy some supposedly good ones in the US only to find that they can't be reworked or are as expensive to do so as what you can get over there in the UK. Unfortunately, as the value of these cars goes up, so do the parts and services to keep them in good shape.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Re: Rear wheel drum splines worn or not
Hi Tim
Relining drums is problematic the first consideration is the material used for the liner. steel is not that great so the preferred solution is to use a high quality cast iron drum as the donor. you can use liquid Nitrogen liquid Helium is not an option. I am not a fan of compressing the splines especially on A drums. the splines especially in your case need to have the insert replaced and pinned. A used drum if the splines are good and the diameter is comparable to your present one is the most cost effective. If your drum is well in tolerance and better than the used drum then consider replacing the splines.

Re: Rear wheel drum splines worn or not
jacques, thanks for the great idea to use a high quality cast iron drum as a donor for the liner, what would you suggest as the best type/model to use.
When I identified the exact type of iron for the liners the minimum purchase amount of tube, in the correct dimensions, was 5 Tonnes, a tad too much for my needs of 2 liners! So mine were made from 2 billets, a lot of waste, but somewhat cheaper and slightly easier to deal with than 5 Tonnes!!
I've got 2 drums at the workshop for new liners at the moment so I will have a chat with the engineers about this.
I just love the stuff that one learns here.

Around here I’d probably look for a large American car drum. But that won’t help you very much. Maybe a truck drum.

Re: Rear wheel drum splines worn or not
Checked rims and 280mm on both.
The other rear drum spines are fine and not a problem. I have bought a used replacement now from the US from a Porsche dealer.
Pictures + measurements look good. Now waiting for it to arrive.
My car was restored mechanically and electrically badly by someone in the US and I think they used lots of bits from donor cars, hence spine only shot on one side.
