Rear wheel drum splines worn or not

#1 Post by Tim Splaine »

I was taking a close look at the rear wheel drum (leading on from one of my other topics) and noticed the spines in the drum are only about 3mm wide, yet the shaft groves are more like 5-6mm. there is an awful lot of back lash due to this. I'm sure the spines can wear but this seems excessive. More than just wear. or is it?

If the wheel nut is tight enough using the torque tool then there should be no backlash from accelerating to braking, but surely this isn't right.

Are my shafts worn, drum splines worn or both, Can you buy replacement drum spines and press them into the drum?

Any suggestions please!

Thanks, Tim

That wear does look excessive Tim. You may want to try PRS for a used drum.

Jay, Tim is in the UK so Martin is not really an option.

I think you would be better off getting a good used drum. Is yours an A or a B? There are several listings on Ebay, UK

I've had someone come back to me with price of £220 each and pictures look good. They're in the US but my brother lives in Florida and can bring one or 2 (if his wife has strong arms) over on his next visit in November. So this is my best option so far.

Tim,
Maybe your best bet would be buy the drums subject to having Martin check them out, before your bringing them to England. That way you will get this job done. Have your relatives send them to The Machine Shop if the seller won't. (It's not too hard to get boxes from U-Haul and ship them FedEX. If I were you I would correspond directly with Martin)

Tim: Take some excellent pictures with your phone and send them to Martin. No cost involved! You will receive a price quote and comments about their condition. You are welcome to tell him that Al recommended him.
