Steve Proctor cites incompetent sanding. The doors should be sanded off of the car. When sanded properly the door should be essentially flat left to right when finished with no recess except for slight "easing" (to hold paint) at the very edges.

Well after trying heat gun, then stripper for paint, I fell back to orbital sander 80 grit.
Made a dent today.
Confirmed car had original Ruby then yellow then Tangerine finally dark blue and even original primer.
The work continues.

Steve

Steve, ruby red is a lovely color. Here is a photo of my D; ruby red with a black interior. You are welcome to stop by and see it in person.

Martin,
I counted the shims and removed doors via bolt then popped out the hinge easy peasy.
Will go back together in reverse do not anticipate any drama as this 356 has had a well healed life.

Steve, if you ask a question then ignore all the advice, so be it. That is how life’s lessons are learned.

84832 '58 Speedster strip down pre paint.

#38 Post by Steve Raucher »

Hello all,
Figured this is the right forum here to continue showing progress on my Speedster.
Parts stripped off and most paint four colors and prime. Almost fifty years since last paint dark blue by thieves.
Just the dash and some jams to due may have the shop finish it.
Stay tuned for more updates when I have them.
KTF,
Steve

Looking good, Steve. How are you controlling all that sanding dust?

Dave,
Orbital sander has small bag. First sander failed just as I was finishing was replaced with new like sander.
Plastic covering interior. Then my corded garden air blower to blow it all out.
Still dust lingers in garage, house and likely my lungs even though I wore a mask most of the time.
Went through at least 120 6” sanding disks and 3/4 gallon Kleen Strip paint remover.

Every time I’ve stripped a car I’ve vowed to never do another one. Obviously this hasn’t really worked out.
You are doing a good job. It looks like you are learning to be more of a hands-on guy. That’s very good.

Bills Sandblasting Salinas. He works with Empire in Sand City a lot. Will Epoxy primer parts as well.
