Also, VW used 19mm cylinders in their cars in the early 1950s for a period. See the 1953 VW Beetle parts book entries below.

My guess is 19mm Ø at the rear until ~April 1950 on VW Type 1 with hydraulic brakes.

The system which Porsche settled on was 19mm master and 19mm wheel cylinders. 22mm wheel cylinders have not only increased the pedal travel but have also proportionately reduced the pedal force. You may find that going to smaller brake cylinders results in higher pedal force which changes the 'feel" of the brakes. Dot 5 brake fluid also changes the "feel: of the brakes, but I think its advantage far outweighs its disadvantages.

I mounted 19mm wheel cylinders with bleeders now as it is easier to bleed the system with the bleedser screw on the wheel cylinder.
I can go back to bone stock anytime when that brake shoes are worn again :-)

I am very happy with the more hard pressure point on the pedal compared to the more softpressure with the 22mm cylinder and i already drove around 400km with that setup now.
Works fine.

After reading through this thread, I'm still not quite up to speed on what M/C 50143 (February 53)should have.
See pic below, both 21 and 22 are raised numbers on the body.
Bore measures out to 22mm.
Reservoir is Aluminum and ATE.
Is this original to the car?

Oh yes, and further to that, was the reservoir painted silver on top of the aluminum? It appears from my initial cleaning that I have brushed off what appears to be silver paint.
Oxidization perhaps?

Yes, that's original to the car - master cylinder and aluminum reservoir. Same as period VW.

The reservoir is not painted, but it is aluminum and likely has some sort of bright dip coating on it to prevent oxidation. Of course all of these get oxidized and get pinholes in them over time.
