Dellorto carbs

#1 Post by David Jones »

Do Dellorto carbs fit on stock Solex manifolds without the need for an adapter?
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Thanks Greg, I thought that was the case but wanted confirmation. Much appreciated.

I have a set of 40mm DRLA carbs that came on a VW motor I got. I took them all apart and cleaned them and was impressed with the apparent quality of the piece. I have not run them but hear a lot of people say they are great. What is your experience, George, to say they are junk?
I know they are not made any more and parts may be more difficult to get. I do like Webers, too.

Having run all three, dellorto, webers and solex, I agree, the dellorto are great carbs. I now have a set running on my 912. Smooth running and they stay tuned. They also seem less affected by the alcohol fuel precipitates.

I have run 40 Dells (Italian) on my "A" cab for many years. I like them better than the Webers I had on an "A" coupe. I think that they are easier to dial in and maintain than any other carbs I have used.
The coupe had a "B" era engine and the cab engine has been upgraded to Super specs.

There are using new Chinese) Solex carbs available. Knock-offs. We've been using them for some time now. Run perfectly out of the box. ..........Jim.

Mine were very gummed up from sitting - they cleaned up nice though - I’m thinking of trying them on my Beetle

I had 36's on my previous engine but wanting a correct appearance, went with Solexes. The Dells were easier to dial in.

Alan Klingen was a fan of 36mm Dels on ~1600 and 1720 engines; dyno'd well.
It is only my opinion that the factory offered 40mm carbs for homologation purposes, but found a market for them and continued to flog them.
36mm Zeniths work wonderfully on 1720 engines with good manifolds and that's the hard part.
