Oil filter 1956 356 Carrera

#1 Post by Sebastien De Cock »

Hi All.

We want to change the old oil filter of my ‘56 356 Carrera

This one is 10 years old (car standing still)
I think this filter is not the good one, because it doesnt fit good. Does anyone knows which is the correct one?

This was on the car till now:

Looking like the one set up for the Fram PH4, which Wix and others have a cross for.

Hi Sebastion
go to the discussion viewtopic.php?p=428314#p428314 the easiest for you would be the Corvair filter but for originality you might consider the Rainer solution but do you have the original cup?

That's known as the "GRAVEL " STRAINER. It had washable plastic discs that layered in a stack inside the housing I think the purpose was to examine the layers to see if the motor was shedding any Debris. Alan The Stable.

Sebastien,
There are now 4 possible filter types which all have similar tops: (1)The original stack of disks in the aluminum cup. (2)The Rainer Cooney modification which uses the original top and cup but replaces the disks with a modern paper filter. (3)The Forge PH4 filter where the filter replaces the cup and bolts on through the top. And (4) the spin on filter where the filter replaces the cup and spins on to the large thread from the bottom.
It looks like you have the 4th type, probably with a metric thread. If so, you just need to find a spin on filter which matches your thread and seals at the outer rim.

Sebastian - if you want to return to the stock oil filter cup, Jacques LeFriant can supply the adapters to use a modern Mahle disposable filter cartridge. See his website www.klasse356.com.

If you want to return to the stock oil filter cup but no longer have the cup and special top bolt, I made a small run of them and still have two available. The Mahle filter adapters are included. See this thread for a description. viewtopic.php?t=56233

Send me an email if interested. I will also have them for sale at the LA Lit Meet.
