outlaw brakes

#1 Post by Adrian Kors »

Any thoughts on best brake system for outlaw 356 B T5 with 130 hp engine? I know that the original drum brakes are appreciated by many but I would prefer to move to discs, preferably 2 piston. Would consider all options, including non standard or non porsche solutions. Thanks!

There was a recent thread where people were relating their experiences with add-on front disc set-ups - within the last month ...

thanks greg, yes, I believe this viewtopic.php?p=427891#p427891 is the thread you refer to. there are several front disc conversion kits but, if i'm not mistaken, all have single piston calipers. also looking to go for discs all round. thanks :)

I`d go with a stock rebuilt 356C brake system.....you don`t need more......plenty of wheel choices.

I think you’re right Adrian - they are all single piston/floating caliper that I’ve seen. If you want to retain the 205mm wheel bolt pattern, one of these kits might supply you with 90% of the parts and then find a multi-piston caliper. I’ve seen kits with aluminum hubs and others with cast iron, which has to weigh a ton, I put the kit from CB vw parts on my beetle and it works ok - it increases the track by about 24mm as well.
Are you planning to do front and rear discs, or just fronts?

What’s nice about the C setup is they’ve already got the front/rear balance figured out. Most modified brakes consist of whatever looks cool, with no testing or computations.

hi Greg, I'd prefer to go discs all round. i'll be putting a fairly interesting engine into it which will do 130 hp out of the box and I want to be able to stop easily without having the ongoing maintenance required of drums.

hi Martin, yes, you're right. the challenge is finding all the pieces...there is a set for sale on the classifieds but its an old ad and not sure if still available (am checking). it would be nice if there was a complete C disc kit (not a conversion kit) that was available for fitting onto earlier cars. thanks for your input

I can ask a friend who was involved in restoring a speedster back to drums. He may have a lead. Or parts.

CSP Inn Germany make an excellent aftermarket disc brake kit for a 356.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Does Wilwood have anything or is a set up from an early 911 or 912 adaptable?

Maybe touch base with John Willhoit since he is building engine with much more horsepower and torque than stock and has probably has modified the systems to improve braking.

I used this kit with wilwood (available with 2 or 4 caliper piston) :
