Solex 40PII carb adjusting

#1 Post by Doug McDonnell »

On Youtube Tom Perazzo just posted an excellent carb video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THh9ajtHnp8 This is a subject that comes up often and I think that this video will be a big help to those who are tuning Solex carbs for the 1st time including setting the float level with the factory tool. Thank you Tom

Tom also did a similar video on Webers when he had the 912 engine in his 911 body. He spent 20 minutes explaining and going through the circuits and their function. I was impressed when he pulled the main jets and was driving on the idle circuits only. Watching both will give you a good over view of carburetor set up and tuning. His use of a wide band O2 sensor for diagnostics and verification of the jetting is unique in 356 community.

Tom re your main jets, I have a similar engine build. I found that 130 main jets to work very well.m

I Agree Brian
Tom always presents whatever He does in an easy to follow format
I couldn't believe it when he drove his 912 round the block with the Main Jets removed from the Weber's. Just shows how much the Idle Circuit does !
I do enjoy His videos.

I would like his pedal pusher. Mrs B moans about sitting in the car and can't hold a steady rpm!!

In the latter years of the 912 Porsche introduced a different distributor that assisted in providing a smooth running engine. You must realize that the youngest Solex carburetor is 54 years old (when do it wear out?) Your engine and carburetors need to be in original (not worn out) condition for carburetors to work properly. (including spark plug wires) Distributors may also be functioning improperly. Fortunately there is a solution for this situation. ZIMZ
OH YUCK!!! I made the error of watching YOU TUBE and seeing the assembly of a VW and a Modified VW. No torque wrench, no measuring tools, no engine stand!!! Adjusting the valves on the new engine while sitting on a concrete floor straddling the engine unable to start with 6 they blasted it with 12 and it finally sort of came to life. You cannot fix your carburetors if nothing works correctly on the engine. You cannot install fuel injection if the engine has old age situations (like me!) al

I use a Harbor Freight clamp as a pedal pusher. Reverse the one end of the clamp so it pushes rather than clamps. Of course earlier cars with a hand throttle don't need it.

Thanks guys for the feedback!
I do lots of unconventional stuff, so be forewarned. It's the F around and find out approach😃
I'm surprised no one called me out on the chirping right side carb. I've since discovered a vacuum leak there. Either due to a cracked insulator or mismatched insulator heights.
I also hope to try the 130 mains.
Fingers crossed this unfinished car makes it out to some of the lit show festivities.
If you see an Irish green SC without side windows that's me! Say hello
