Looking for a good 356 Shop to perform a PPI far from my home

#1 Post by William Whited »

Hello all,
I found a car almost 5 1/2 hours from me a 60 356B Super 90
Coupe I’m speaking to the gentleman that owns it and he is quite knowledgeable about the mechanics of the car but does not know body repair. I have sent photos to knowledgeable body repair men and the consensus of three of them is that from underside photos it seems to have been in an accident at some point it is 60 plus years and does not appear to be repaired correctly. I’m willing to hire an individual that knows 356’s to confirm this and see if it is safe to drive the way the repair was completed and or can it be corrected and if so how much would it be to correct it to make it right.
Location is close to Canton NEW YORK
PM me for exact location.

You're way up near the Canadian border with that one, I doubt you will find anyone in the vicinity. If you're in NJ and very serious about the car I would take a drive up with an expert, you will probably have to pay them for the day. Might call Paterek Bros, maybe Andrew is feeling like a roadtrip.

Remember spending money to not buy a car is the best money every spent, so spend freely to find out the car is NOT the car you want. The flipside is if the car is the car you want you know it's a great car, so money well spent again.

Bill You could fly someone into Syracuse and pick them up and look together. Or pay for a rental car for person doing the PPI. Neither would be cheap but both would be cheaper than buying a poor 356 and trying to make it right. Unfortunately it would be difficult to drive the car in current weather conditions there since below zero and probably lots of snow on the roads. Salt too if they use it.

John is as far from the car as William is, almost 5 hours, in the other direction.

Yep, Juan Sancho Wilberg. Jacques, remember when he was next door to Richard Miller down on India Street? I think their machinist - Sergio - was next door as well. They had some killer gatherings down there for cars and motorcycles. Those were great times.

Will, perhaps you can post a few of the pictures here that you are wondering about. That may already be enough to save you the trouble. Cars in the NE usually have more body issues than just poor accident repairs.

Hey Bill - the Stoddard sponsored LA Lit event is just 2 weeks away - you can learn a lot by attending a bus tour of the various parts & restoration shops in SoCal to help you get more education. I’ve met some great folks & learned a lot about the 356.

Hi everyone,
Really appreciate all the advice and thoughts.
I’m driving to Andrew’s shop in Chatum NJ and he will take the time to show me on one of his 356 projects what to look for. I already shared pictures with him and he sees things of course I don’t. We will go over everything tomorrow I’ll let everyone know how I make out.

Hello Steve Procter,
You are awesome a member on here since 1977. It’s funny but my first Porsche was a 1964 356C I owned it for three years I bought it in 1976, wish I had kept it, the car was so much fun and never let met me down. It was only 12 years old at the time and it had major rust issues throughout the undercarriage. I went to the dark side and bought a 61 Corvette to go along with my 66 Vette. It’s time for me to relive my youth I’ll get one of the 356’s again.
Bill
