My Karmann-bodied coupe has the tar sound deadening on top of the gas tank.

My Karmann, that I have owned for 50+ years, also has the tar deadening on top of the gas tank.

Interesting about the fuel tank pad as there are some Cs without it and I assumed this was a Karmann thing as that particular tar paper material, which is everywhere on Reutter cars, isn't used on the Karmann bodies. The sound deadening on the floors, etc on Karmann bodies is more fibrous, more like the T6 trunk pad. Mine is a later production Karmann - not sure if that could be a factor.

Another small detail for the OCD that I doubt most judges don't even know is the load spreader for the tow hook on the inside of the battery box floor. Reutter were round and Karmann were rectangular.

The front center one is rectangular on Reutter bodies. I think the rear legs get washers, is that what you are referring to?

I don't know if I agree with this. My car is a karmann that had the original battery box when I got the car in 90's. When I replaced the battery box I reused the round washers from the original floor. They are rather thick.

I'll try to find picture evidence or I even have the original floor still that I can dig out.

Seems possible to me that the factory would grab whatever washers they wanted especially if the square washer bin was empty.

Tom There are still a fair number of C's with Karmann Bodies that still have most or all of their unique Karmann Battery box floors. More near you than me for sure. Check some at shows. Here is one Vic sold a few years ago on BAT with original battery box floor and the rectangular spacers : https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1964-porsche-356c-8/ Picture #19 for the spacers and #41 for typical Karmann drain holes in the floor of battery box which I know you are familiar with and may even sell.

My brother's late '63, 213720, did have the Reutter-style tar paper on top of the gas tank and the Karmann-style material elsewhere.

I think no tar paper on the gas tank may be a very late '64 or '65 thing. Anyone with a late car they think has the original gas tank?

Looking for cars in the Sept/Oct '64 and beyond range. Mine is a late Oct '64 Karmann and does not have the covering on the fuel tank.
