Engines and cases ON bat

#1 Post by Mark Todorovich »

I have made all of the cases I have available. Even connected a couple to the cars they came from. I have 3 cases from my cars that I would love to connect with , no luck.
There is a big parts stash on BAT right now.
I wrote down the Numbers if you are lucky enough to get a hit.

No luck for me, but I keep trying. I encourage everyone to put any on the list, it is a real achievement to make a car whole again.

Nice stash, but it’s not going back in that trailer. I thought I had some stuff, but this has me beat.

I too am downsizing my parts stash, I have one 356 and many spares. I have spent the last two months sorting, cleaning, painting, assembling and I general getting it all ready for the upcoming swap meets. My pile is growing, lining it all up, at least have a full PU truck load. First will be the LA Boys Republic swap, then Kelly Park VW meet, and then North South. Prices will be cheap, I have 5 engine cases complete with 3rd piece, air cleaners, Zeniths, engine sheet metal, oil filters and fillers, disc brake hubcaps, and lots of small engine parts.

All S90 engine numbers start with an 8 (except for the odd short 63 run where they added a 0 in front)

My '63 Super's original engine (stolen c. 1973) started with a 0; 0700772.

One of the cases has this 3rd piece,#780490, which is not a good number. The case shop number on all three pieces match, and there is no engine type or the normal 6 digit numbers.
It appears to be a C case with the reinforcement webs on the flywheel end. Maybe an attempt to hide a stolen engine? It's been sitting for at least 40 years.

Most early 63 cases (normal, super and s90) started with a 0 for a brief period. No clue why

With engine cases you are making TWO ASSUMPTIONS! the first is that the seller has measured the engine crankcase bore and it is exactly as specified in the Specs Please book. Assuming that the seller has the correct measuring tools to do this. Most salvage yards do not have these tools. The correct temperature for measuring is 80 degrees. The second assumption is that the seller knows the running changes that Porsche made and has given the case a careful inspections for cracks and other distortions.
If you purchase a case that needs to be line bored plan on it taking a incredible long time and an incredible amount of money. Zim

The 8 kind of looks like it was double stamped, i.e. it was originally a 3 (which would be a valid number). Maybe Fritz or Hans stamped the three upside down (first case after lunch) then corrected it, making it an 8.
