Live in or around Austin, TX & 356 Enthusiast?

#1 Post by Mark Pustka »

Working on a restoration, really just want to get it running so will not be a full restoration of a 1958 356A Coupe. Belonged to my Dad and moved it into my garage in Austin in November of 2021. Made some progress on removal of the rusty floor panel but would sure help to talk to and/or have someone local come have a look. I'm getting help from afar but trading photos, facetime phone calls and emails aren't the same as face to face - especially if someone in the area has restored a 356. Let me know. I'd be very interested in an introduction a tour of my tub and a beer or 2 if you like :D .

Mark has started removing the bad floors. Overall the car is not all that bad. He has it home now and can use any available help. I have been helping long distance, via phone and email. I think a group of 356 owners should get together and go visit him. A winter day of driving, get together, then cycle buy and meet him, grab a tool and help out.

Nothing better than a dozen 356’s parked in front of your house on a Saturday.

Hi,

I live in CC Ranch. I have, among others, a 356A Cab, 1957. A few years ago I sold a '58 to Switzerland. Give me a call after dinner or tomorrow 408 458 0498

Hi Mark, I lived in Austin until 2016 and did not find any other 356 enthusiasts in the area. You might try Bill Hamilton of Hamilton classics in Martindale Texas, about 40 minutes southeast of Austin. Bill did the restoration on my ‘64 SC and his shop would do about 4 cars a year, only for 356 cars. He should be pretty familiar with your metal work questions. He’s fully retired now and not taking in any work but possibly he’d be willing to share some insights on your questions. He’s a nice guy and a 356 fan. Here’s his contact information from the Hamilton Classics website, which is still up.

Hi Mark,

I live in Austin and own several dozen air-cooled Porsches. More importantly, I own a shop where we restore 2-3 cars a year for my collection. I'm really an early 911 guy who owns a couple 356's (65 Coupe and a 60 Roadster) but my metal guy is one of the best there is, formerly worked for Roy Smalley, and has been doing 356 work for decades.

Send me a PM and we can chat. Happy to assist if I can.

Mark, I am in Austin. I picked up my 356C early last year under similar circumstances. It’s running now and I am working to make it stop. Let’s connect through email. I’d like to see your A model. I’m not a body expert, but can give perspective on the mechanics of 356 stopping and going.

I’d like to visit the guy in Martindale as well. Been there many times by kayak, didn’t know he was down there.

You can call us, we are next to D/FW airport on Airport Freeway. and make an arrangement to visit the shop. Normally we have 5 or 6, 356/912 cars in various stages of repair. We have a really good 52 year accumulation of stuff!
I think you should look for a 1,500 to 2,000 square foot shop area and purchase substantial work benches, shelving and overhead LED lights. AND A BIG FAN. Space is a necessity and you will end up using all of it.
You are about a 3 hour drive away. al zim 817-267-4451

I think Jim means the Member Directory which is on the CE Registry site. Correct me if I am wrong Jim.
