Re: '63 tool bags

#16 Post by Peter Silten »

I have owned several 63 B toolkits over the past 50 years and have never seen an original 63 B toolkit with a smooth, vinyl interior. The one 63 B toolkit that I presently own has a cloth type material on the inside, similar to the insides of the two tool bags in Mike Wilson’s photograph above. But if others I respect say they have seen originals with a smooth vinyl material on the inside then I just learned something new. I do, however, have a question about the wrenches in the BaT toolkit. All of the wrenches for the 63 B toolkit that I have seen over the years are stamped “DIN 895” on one side along with the size of the wrench and nothing else. A photograph of the four wrenches that I am familiar with can be seen on Eric Cherneff’s website 365tool.com: https://www.356tools.com/wrenches/T6Bwrenches.jpg
The toolkit that just sold on BaT has three wrenches that are stamped “DIN 895” and “Germany.” The 8mm wrench just has “DIN 895.” Were there two versions of the 63 B wrenches?

Pics of my three '63 tool kits including close-ups of the lining of the bags and wrenches. One spare wrench has some kind of logo but none are stamped "Germany". One bag does have a replacement tie string. I have noticed two different ties; one looks woven the other smooth with almost a satin appearance. I'll add the rest in a second post.

Disclaimer: in no way do I consider myself an expert on things Porsche including tool kits.

Mike

Update: I identified the logo on the one wrench. It is for the KC Tool Co. of which Heyco is a product line.

Thanks Mike for the photos. Those wrenches are the real McCoy. I believe that the BaT wrenches, with the exception of the 8/9mm wrench are not correct for the 63B toolkit.

the 1963 tool kit you cleaned for someone in the past being the same tool
kit as the one I have listed on BAT now. You have validated what I know
and I hope the person’s interested in mine will be a registry member and
will also see your matching tool kit. Thank you again. Tony

Hi Peter-
Steve here. A Polish man I bought the correct wrenches from (except one - I need a 10/11 still) verified through some German friends that the blank wrenches are correct (no Germany etc)
Live and learn!
Glad I have the kit now for my car.

Another original '63 toolkit, appears to have the vinyl lining on the inside of the bag, I'd have to go look but I'm pretty sure it was.

Definitely looks vinyl, Jim. Compare it to the ones I have with a different inside section.
