Can't get engine in

#1 Post by David Trower »

I am attempting to put a SC engine in my 59 cp. It has been in before. I have got the 2 lower bolts started but I can not get the engine any farther. It needs to go another 1 inch in. I have tried pulling the jack with a ratchet strap attacher to the jack but it will not go any further. What could it be hung up on? What do you think the problem is? How does one push the engine in?

If the splines are lined up, it will push in easily. Try raising and or lowering the engine. ...........Jim.

Did you change the transaxle rubber mounts? If so, some had longer studs that interfere with engine installation.

Throw out bearing is too far out?
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

A wide C muffler in an A body?
Also put it in gear with the parking brake on. Then turn the engine back and forth a bit, sometimes that allows the clutch spline to line up and drop in.

Rotate the fan belt pulley a bit as you push it in. Make sure the rear of the engine is not too low. If you have new rubber on the front plate you may need to pull the engine in place with nuts on the mounting bolts and studs.

Did you possibly replace your transmission mounts while the engine was out?

Two possibilities
1. Clutch plate in back to front
2. Top bolts for the engine mounts have the nuts outside, bolt heads go on the inside.
Let’s know the answer.

It's probably just the tilt angle, it needs to be just right to align the splines. Keep trying with tilting at angles until you can get things lined up.

Examine the engine to transmission gap at the top. Is the gap 1" there as well? Or greater?

When I have this issue it always seems to be the engine is not in the proper vertical axis, ie, the rear of the engine is too low. If the gap from the engine to transmission is less at the bottom than on the top this is the case.

Do not attempt to mechanically force it. It can be aggravating, but if it all gets lined up properly it will slide in quite easily. A satisfying feeling!

did you replace or have apart the clutch plate? if so did you use a lineup tool to line up the clutch disc when it went back together?

Hi Dave, there are some good ideas posted above. Tilt angle per Bruce could be your issue. I would try leveling the front of the car to match the back, this worked on a Convertible D that was giving us fits. Also, if you have a C muffler, you might have an interference problem, per Martin. Make sure no spark plug wires have fallen in the way, too. Let us know what it was. Good luck, John

David - is the car in Maine or Ontario ?
you could invite some one local over to help.. it may be easier with two people, one Jack man and the other the wiggle it in person..

I took the engine out, looked things over. I can see no visible problem. Got lower studs 3/4 inch in, can't get the remaining 1 inch. I am using mechanical force , a ratchet strap, which I have been advises not to.Have engine height proper as far as I can see. Don't know what else to do.
