Any chance you changed the transmission mounts .. and put the bolts in backwards ?? .. you all know how I know that this could happen to anyone ... !!!!

You do not say whether you have checked this
If the Nuts are inside the Bell Housing - you will never get the Engine in the Hole
Hey guys, my first post! Question for David, why did you take the motor out, what did you change or do? Mount bolts are a quick check. A recent stupid pill I took in rebuilding a motor last year was installing a 200mm 912 flywheel on a a s90. It goes in all but 1 in.for the ring teeth hitting the bel housing…..8 attempts until I took the smart pill….
Welcome to the Forum, Chris! All of us have prescriptions for Smart Pills. The longer you take them, the less you need them, but you'll never be immune enough to quit them for good. Oh, and some Smart Pills are quite a bit more expensive than others.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....
This should take some fiddling but not much force. Just a thought, when the clutch was installed was the clutch disk spline lined up with the flywheel using a mandrel?
I haven't had the clutch out so this is not the problem. Tomorrow I am going to raise the bach of the car just to give me more room under it. This will level the car although I agree with Al Zim regarding angle.
I have installed many engines with the rear end higher than the front end, and as Doug M. said, to paraphrase, you have to get the clutch disc splines to slide over the output shaft by being on the same plane. A lot of times it has been no problem, but there have been times where it was a real pitb. But it really is easier to have the car level to get it on the same plane. That's one of the real benefits I found with a lift, which I am lucky to have; it makes it so much easier to slide it forward and in once you're in position. Can't wait to hear of your success and what was going on.
I took out the other enging because there was a problem. I have not changed the motor mounts. Just a few points regarding comments I have received. Thanks for all the comments and recommendations. Keep them coming.
I've been R & R-ing engines over 60 yrs. w/the rear raised @ an angle w/o any problems until a couple
of years ago trying to install one that wouldn't several times. Finally found the problem.
I also installed the rear trans-mounts and didn't pay attention to the slightly longer studs not being lower
to clear the trans. bell's ID diameter! Had to redo the work to eliminate the problem and the engine
easily went in nicely. As said, this was the 1st one ever encountered!!!
Seasons Greetings to all and have a safe New Year!
