Steering Wheel

#1 Post by Billy Iglesias »

Hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. After years of reading, looking and waiting I finally pulled the trigger on a 1965 C Cabriolet and couldn't be happier. My problem is I'm so happy with it and excited to finally have a car I've dreamed about that i just want to fiddle with it. I think a wooden steering wheel would look fantastic. I haven't done a whole bunch of research but what is everyone's general thought on a Nardi or Les Leston wheel? Any advice or pointers?

Thanks
Billy

I bought this Carrera 2000 repro. wheel from SMC and am quite happy with it. SMC runs sales occasionally, and you might be able to get it for less than $1000.

There is a nice old article on different wood wheels in the technical library section. Go to Interiors then drop down menu.

If you are a bit taller, the LL is great. The smaller diameter gives you some more leg room.

Bruce,

Is the wheel segmented like original Carrera wood wheels? I looked at SMCs page and I cannot tell.

Billy, Congrats on your C cab!

Go to the page in the technical library as Doug suggested and look at the different period wheels that were used on 356s. Only "dished" spoke wheels will be correct for your C cab, not the flat spoked wheels. Also, steer clear of the generic 1980s/1990s fat rimmed Nardi wheel with its small diameter, fat grip and way too big hub, it really looks out of place on our cars (my apologies to anyone I offended with that statement) 8-)

I would install the dansk replica of the original carrera wood wheel. We sell them here, and having two factory originals on two of my cars, really like the way Dansk has reproduced it. You can get the stoddard center horn button kit and be all set. They have also reproduced the original black stock wheel and it is very very nice

A) The factory did not make any wood wheels for the flat type spokes on the 1960 and 1961 T-5 cars.
B) If you happen to crash into something with a wood wheel make sure you have a shoulder harness to keep your head away from the wheel as it splinters. al zim

Congratulations of your 1965 C Cabriolet! After about 20 years of wanting an appropriate wood steering wheel for my ‘65 C and looking at all of the options, I pulled the trigger about 5 years ago. My wheel came from Bruce Crawford, long term member and supporter of our club. In my opinion he makes the best option. Bruce’s steering wheels uses the factory black wheel and replaces the “black” with wood. It looks very correct, even though my 356 C is not a Carrera. Give him a call! Bruce Crawford, Wood Steering Wheel restoration 805 528 6240. He will have surplus wheels so you can keep your original wheel in a box and with the car. I truly love the feel and the safety of having the original configuration with the wood instead of black synthetic material. Looks OEM!
