Rattle can electrical contact cleaner
Anyone have an opinion (pro or con) on using spray contact cleaner? In particular, using it on the signal flasher mechanism.
Thanks
Spike

Sure, in my opinion is it works well to clean electrical contacts. Been using it for years. It's mostly isopropyl alcohol.

I use the stuff regularly, most recently on a recalcitrant parking brake light switch. If you use it on the turn signal switch, you might want to lubricate the mechanical bits afterward. Electronic cleaner will also remove any lube.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Re: Rattle can electrical contact cleaner
I used a high end electric cleaner on a turn signal switch. Solved an issue with an intermit brake light that I chased for three weekends. After using the cleaner, the switch was stiff, so used a bit spray lubricant. No problems after five or six years.

Re: Rattle can electrical contact cleaner
I've been using Puretronics Extra-Strength Contact Cleaner, (PT3600). Excellent for cleaning electrical contacts. Originally used it to clean out DOT 5 silicon brake fluid from metal portions of my brake system when I converted to DOT 4. At that time the label said removes silicone. It doesn't state that any more, but when I called, they said the formula had not changed.

Re: Rattle can electrical contact cleaner
I had an intermittently non-operational turn signal switch. I shot it with CRC contact cleaner and it fixed the problem - so even the new stuff works to an extent. I still have a can of old Freon-base stuff that I keep around in case the new environmentally safe cleaner doesn't work. So far I haven't had to use it.

Thanks to all who took the time to respond.
I will proceed with the spray cleaner and see what happens. After 2 weeks of chasing this problem, all roads seem to lead to this switch.
Hope you all (Ya'll) are having a great Holiday Season!

As everyone else has said, that will work fine. Put a towel in your lap, spray the innards of the flasher switch liberally and move the lever up and down quickly. Many a flasher switch have been revitalized over the years with this method.SPIKE JONES wrote: ↑Mon Nov 28, 2022 12:53 pm Anyone have an opinion (pro or con) on using spray contact cleaner? Re: Rattle can electrical contact cleaner
I've used the CRC QD Electronic Cleaner several times. It is plastic safe and dries quickly. You can get it at most auto part chains. Works in areas that are hard for you to get to, but may be gummed up. Say coffee into the console switches in a Cayenne.SPIKE JONES wrote: ↑Mon Nov 28, 2022 12:53 pm Anyone have an opinion (pro or con) on using spray contact cleaner? Re: Rattle can electrical contact cleaner
If you lube a switch after cleaning, do not use a silicone-based product - it can produce a high resistance coating at the contacts which can overheat.
