Re: Jack - Restoration
Hi Dan,
Funny that you should mention the clips. I was struggling with them just the other day. The tool you need is a set of snap ring pliers. I have a set I bought on Amazon. Even with the right tool removing and installing the clips can be real challenging.

Re: Jack - Restoration
The correct blue color has come up many times, which you can find in earlier posts. I still swear by Rustoleum Royal Blue, which is easy to find and easy to brush on. I've got four original jacks, and the original blue color is a little different across all of them. All are very close to Royal Blue, and one is almost spot-on. This is a case of there being several "right" colors. So go with what is easiest.

I sense variations in manufacturing and aging has a lot to do with the color of the base. I've played with several colors, Sea Foam blue, older Ford engine paint, etc.

Re: Jack - Restoration
Okay - another very basic question - and I should know the answer..
How do you get the jack to go down..
and yes, I can now see how the circlip is very difficult to remove..

Jim: a pic showing where the lug wrench or jack handle is placed to lower the jack. I also include a pic of some colors I considered for the base.

I’ve never heard this mentioned but I think it’s important to release it all the way in one sudden drop. If it stops halfway it is so abrupt that I think it would be very hard on the jack spur.

Unfortunately the computer distorts the true color, original colors from a 55 sharp transition jack
Hope this helps. The last picture is what was under black paint.

We might be worrying about the color more than the factory did...

Probably true. The same can probably be said about every part that is restored/reproduced. The original sets the bar for those who care about those things.Wes Bender wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 8:17 am We might be worrying about the color more than the factory did...

Re: Jack - Restoration
It should be a RAL color, but I have no idea which one. But this is a good reference to start. The 7015 slate gray is spot on. I used it to match some power, to coat a set of lug nuts, was perfect.

Re: Jack - Restoration
Then I took my smallest snap ring plyers, bent the tips into a very narrow gage - and easy, came right off.
next is to blast and paint the metal jack parts. one in black, the other in bare ..

Re: Jack - Restoration
Good to point out, Brad. Not worth trying to save the snap ring, and they are available.
