Unfortunately, Helge, replacing the rubber bushings is a necessary but not a trivial operation. If the bushings are not replaced, the steel cover will eventually wear a grove in the tube. That round tube is the torsion bar anchor, and it is part of the spring plate. There is an identical rubber bushing on either side of the plate. The outer bushing is carried in the cover but the inner bushing is inside the spring plate. You have to remove the spring plate to do the job. The job is complicated by the fact that there are several similar rubber bushings available and even polyurethane replacements for race cars. But if the replacement bushings are not exactly the same size as the original (VW 36 HP) bushings it will be impossible to bolt down the cover. Use care in getting the new rubber bushings.
Since you will have the rear suspension apart, bushing replacement is a good time to set the suspension where you want it.

Replacing the outer bushing will help a little, and it is very simple. Be very careful to not break off any of those four bolts!

Folks,
The forum is a place where the community can exchange information related to the 356. In order to facilitate that exchange, topic subject titles should clearly describe the topic. “Cute” subjects like “how to check” or “another problem” are not descriptive and do not add value to the community. Although we try to be helpful, please do not respond to posts with these type of subject lines. A reply to the effect of “please repost with a more descriptive subject line” would be appropriate.
