6V LED Headlight Replacement

#1 Post by Henry Feiner »

Any advice on the best alternatives for getting bright lighting with a 'drop-in' replacement for sealed-beam 6V headlights?
Regards
Henry

Jules Dielen may have just introduced plug & play led headlights.

Ken, I believe that they are coming down the pike. Not here yet. Meantime this is what can be accomplished but at probably more cost and more work than plug and play by Jules. This was a few years ago when the options were few. I had to go with 6 to 12 volt converters to get a good beam pattern, good penetration and good low beam cutoff.

Henry -- if Jules does not have 6V LED Headlights, you can get them from NLA. Link below says 12v, but the lights are for both 6v and 12v.

I replaced mine 2 years ago ('63 B). Just need to unplug the old 6V lights, remove the bulb from the bucket, put the new LEDs in the bucket and plug in. Also I had no issues with headlight rings or stone guards. Just be careful taking off the springs holding the bulb in the bucket - they can fly!

Mine are almost done for 6v... 12v are about 2 weeks out.. the nice thing about mine is that they have the correct yellow hue, not the typical 'prius' blue white so they look exactly like stock, just massively brighter. These will be plug and play of course, and i will have them for european lights as well.

It is nice to have options and as far as I know I will be the only one with 'vintage white' LED headlights in the world.
As soon as they are ready to ship i will announce it here first as well as on my website and instagram.

Jules, will the 6v bulbs be for the standard bulb housing or the H4? I bought some H4 6v LED bulbs from the UK as described in the following link. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=37564
Last I heard, they were out of stock. Just checked. They may be NLA - confusing website.

Although they are the “white” (6,000k) light, I liked the way they had the horizontal light cut off of the H4 so as to not blind oncoming drivers and they are much brighter. Almost twice as bright.

Hi Mark, i plan to have both styles available in vintage white. I just do not like the look of the bright white in our cars.

What is considered to be the standard bulb housing- a complete lens and reflector to replace a sealed beam? Don’t those usually take an H4?
What type bulbs are available for old European headlight assemblies? I use H4s there after two minutes of filing where the three bulb tabs sit.

P45t is the RoW fitting. An H4 does not fit in those, you will have a rather large opening where dust and crud will enter the headlight and ruin the reflector. There is also nothing to keep the bulb from rotating. The h4 focal point is also different from a p45t but the light output from a halogen is always better than the stock p45t tungsten.
