For those who want to upgrade the old sealed beams to the H-4 headlights, Toyota has great deal, on 7" lights. They are offered as upgrades for the FJ and other SUV Toyotas. Made by Koito which is one of Japan's best auto lighting supplier. The kit comes with two housing/relectors, 2 h-4 12 volt bulbs, very substantial wiring harness and 12 volt relays. Part Number 81110-60P70 Headlamp Assembly $46.56 /set of two. On Line order, plus shipping, less than one Hella. E-6 code.
According to the "lighting expert" Daniel Stern, these are better than the old Cibie H-4, which were the best for a number of years. Here's article on what is available currently http://www.danielsternlighting.com/prod ... ducts.html. scroll down and he will talk about the Cibie and Koito
Took about 10 minutes to change from the old Cibie to the new Koto, switched the 6 volt bulbs too. The bulb holding ring is a firm twist, use a rag to keep your fingers intact.

Photos are Cibie, front, rear, showing the two units, holder ring, and finished Koito installed. They do work very well, a slightly wider hot spot on low bean, and slightly wider high beam

The problem that is not taken care of is the power consumption and I think Jules LED's and reflectors are still the answer. H4 lamps take 10 amps apiece and that is 2/3 of the output of the 180 watt generator and even the 200 watt generator will struggle on a wet night to keep up with power needs and you are in deep doo doo if you turn the fog lights on.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

David Jones, I agree 100%, LEDs do reduce the power consumption to a livable wattage. I have LEDs on everything except for the headlights. My post was for those who want better lighting without going the total reflector/LED route, just add some 6 volt H-4s, which are somewhat rare and with questionable quality. There are so many are still running around with 40+ year old sealed beams, or old H-4 where the reflector has tarnished. Even the new H6006 sealed beams are only rated at 40 watt @ 6.2 volts.
The Toyota reflector units are as good as you can get at great price, buy some 6 volt H-4 bulbs, add in set of relays and you will double the light output. Standard H-4 6volt may put out 1100 lumens, 55/60-65 watts. Old sealed beams may put out 800 lumens when new. David I tried your method of using 6-12 volt converter and 12 volt bulbs, they worked but the converters were not happy with the 35 watts at 12.4 volt output, smoked one converter. They said 5amp output but the 3.4 amps needed overloaded them. Hiding four converters, 2 in each bucket is a challenge. Plus the cooling fans extend the length of the bulb by about 1/4" into the bucket, I didn't measure the clearance but it is very close to the back. I have tried several different headlights, many say 6 volt LEDs but really need 8-9 volts to start to light. A couple worked on 6 volt but would quit when at idle, they needed 6.5 volts to work and had no beam control no difference in High or Low beam.
So looking forward to new LEDs that will work.

Steve, I used 2 x 10 amp 6 to 12 volt converters.
One for high and one for low beam. The green board you showed a picture of I use for my MP3 player and phone charger.
My converters are sitting partially under the trunk cover on my 64C and next to the fuse block on the A car.
I should add that there are many 12 volt LED's to choose from.

Steve, please try mine. Full brightness at 5.5v and specifically designed for use in a 6v system. Tested and tried in multiple 6 volt 356s. They will put any H4 to shame at a fraction of the draw. Clear cutoff for low beam, easy to adjust and warm white, just like stock. And imho you should not run 55w H4 too long. When you add it all up (headlights, running lights, dash lights, license plate lights, a radio and another few amps to your coil) your generator will be suffering constantly when driving with your lights on (even if just to be seen)
