Exhaust Recommendation ... please

#1 Post by Dan Scioscia »

Wanted to ask for recommendations on what folks would use to replace factory exhaust. Mine needs to be replaced. So do i go with a stock set up , or stainless steel or slight performance. The car is a dead stock, 1964 C. Any help or pointers, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Dan

If you can find a good one, a Leistritz is what I would use for a bone stock car. I like the sound and performance, and it looks right. I would stay away from Dansk, given their reputation for fitment problems and cracked welds, though they might have improved their product. But you can't go wrong with Leistritz. There is another option from Germany, Google Eisenmann exhaust. Excellent reputation.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

I googled the Eisenmann exhaust, and it looks great. It looks to be a reproduction of the Leistritz.

Jim Learmonth bought one and was extremely satisfied with it. May be on the expensive side but amortized over maybe 10 years probably worth it.

Dan, check out M&K stainless mufflers, sold by Zim’s. They are made in USA. I put one on my 65 C several years ago. It fit, doesn’t leak and has a nice sound. One is going on the 1956 Speedster currently being restored.

Personal experience Eisenmann great fit and quality, bit 'boy racer raucous' for our taste but lots of other people loved the sound.

So the Eisenmann sounds a bit "boy racer raucous." And the M & K has a "nice" sound. Which muffler system is comparatively most quiet? I realize his is subjective, but I'm going to replace the after market "extractor" exhaust I bought my car with, and I really don't want a neighborhood annoying sound on my Super 90 if I can avoid it. Annoying is the sound it has now with the shot muffler.

I thought the Eisenman was a clone of the factory muffler. It’s not?

Eisenmann has several options. I ordered one in July and still waiting for it to be made.... They are behind I guess like everyone else. If you need it quickly order from Zim's if they have one in stock. Similar quality and price point.

I have noticed recently that Sierra Madre is selling some new stainless steel Bursch exhausts in a few configurations. They look pretty good. Has anybody tried one?

Don't know the complete Eisenmann range but the one we bought was stainless steel for a '60 going through the bumper overiders and it's tone was 'under review'. That was until the last time I drove past the house and my wife said it's got to go so decision made. But as I said most people liked it & think we're a bit potty, it's a personal preference and everything else about it is great and we can recommended them.

Turbo Thomas in the U.K. do a few very good fitting exhausts for the 356, also vintage speed, the Sebring exhaust is a piece of art.
