I'm searching for a sunroof coupe driver quality car. Besides the Registry classifieds and some local dealers, I Googled "356 sunroof coupe" and found trovit.com which compiles a list. The odd thing is many of the cars are priced way below market. Maybe some listings are old (like ten years or more) or the ads are just teasers. In fact the third one in the first screenshot I recognize as the blue sunroof coupe listed on BHCC that I asked for help here assessing its value. I passed on it (too much rust underneath) and learned that it sold. It was listed on BHCC at 80K. Anyone have experience with trovit? Here are a few screen shots. Too good to be true?

And then there's Automarken.net listing a 1960 Roadster for $56,900! Yikes. Where's my checkbook? Mileage 56,490. I guess they are pricing it by the mile? Pellow Super specs. Wow. These guys must be called out somewhere.

Beware, seems to be another active registry member scammer now!!! I posted a wanted add a couple days ago for an old, patina horn button. One of the replies stuck out for a few of the usual scammer reasons:
  • just joined the registry within the last week 07/01/2024
  • English was a bit odd
  • I asked for some pics and they did send them through, however I did a ‘google image search’ (easy and I highly recommend) and it found the original photos on line, they are copied from a completed eBay listing that sold a couple years ago, see pic
So beware, typical trick for scammers is to copy existing and old for sale pics from eBay or other sites and pretend to have the parts.

I’ve emailed Mark R with details so they can flag membership

This was the eBay listing they copied pics from:

If you want to do an image search, it’s very easy. In Google search just type “google image search” and the following screen will pop up:
IMG_1141.jpeg
Click the small icon that I’ve circled, and then the screen below will pop up and allow you to upload or drag/drop a photo to search:
IMG_1142.jpeg
Then search and you’ll see the screen below with lots of similar pics (this can be useful for identifying objects that your not sure what they are). If you want to find the source of the original pic though, click the “find image source” button.
IMG_1143.jpeg
It will then give you the source if the same pic is already online in this case it was a 2 year old eBay listing:
IMG_1144.jpeg
Clicking on it took me to the completed eBay listing and I could see the exact pics that I’d just been emails

Alex, the fastest approach to shut down a scammer is to forward the complete email response to 356clasmod@porsche356registry.org.

Not specific to any one scammer... You cannot depend on an ID to verify a seller or buyers identity. Be careful out there!

From a news article:

An underground website called OnlyFake is claiming to use “neural networks” to generate realistic looking photos of fake IDs for just $15, radically disrupting the marketplace for fake identities and cybersecurity more generally. This technology, which 404 Media has verified produces fake IDs nearly instantly, could streamline everything from bank fraud to laundering stolen funds. In our own tests, OnlyFake created a highly convincing California driver's license, complete with whatever arbitrary name, biographical information, address, expiration date, and signature we wanted. The photo even gives the appearance that the ID card is laying on a fluffy carpet, as if someone has placed it on the floor and snapped a picture, which many sites require for verification purposes.

That sucks!! What's left, retinal scans?? Somebody somewhere is staying up nights figuring out how to bastardize that process...we are doomed.
