Converting the rear suspension to 911 style

#1 Post by Jonathan Bradbury Bigelow »

Hey guys I have seen some outlaws with a 911 style rear suspension. Going to acquire a 356C project would love to do this conversion and run a 901 gear box. Anyone else done this? And any ballpark on what it might cost?

Call Gary Emory in McMnville Or, He did the first one, and several others later. Or his Son Rod Emory in Burbank at Patrs Obsolete. They are in the vendors listing. They may have a kit by now.

Hi Johnathan
Rod Emory has done a lot of development but you have to get one of his Outlaws to have it. Gary and myself inspired Rod for his first ones but he perfected the transformation to a very high degree of workmanship. I attribute some of the first ones to Vernon Covert and Kurt Kuebler at their shop in Culver City. i believe there is a thread that has pictures of this type of conversion. Depending on the skill of the fabricator it is not difficult. Now it may be much harder to find the componets from valuable short wheel base 911s.

Wow great pictures. I will do more research. I have a source for swb trailing arms and a torsion tube. But I am sure way more goes into it.

See this post. Ask your questions to Michael Moss, he might give you some good answers.

Hi Johnathan
If you visit at 705 Civic Center Dr exit 11 on hwy 5 you might catch me building a 901 conversion box for Rod and definitly a few of those inexpensive motors with extra cams.

hi - i looked at this a while back - here is part of what i wrote on a prior thread - check out excellence magazine, September 2007, pgs. 100-105 - this article is about a T-6 outlaw/track/racer with a type IV engine, 901 tranny, and 911 SWB rear suspension install - i defer to those with actual experience - i was told that if you this conversion, it is very difficult to go back to stock, and i can imagine the swb 911 parts are more difficult to find, and expensive

Feb. 1985 Panorama did a write-up, "Six in a Tub". Also, Hot VW's July 1983 did an article on converting swing arms to IRS.

I looked into this some years ago. I bought a ‘68 912 and a Skirmants camber compensator for the 356 vs convert the 356 to trailing arms.
This solution has worked well since implementing.

...actually, Skirmants camber regulator, not a compensator which only served to compensate for the weaker torsion bars used on cars so equipped. The Skirmants regulator acts as an active part of the suspension .
