Guys,
Definitely no fun if you do not enjoy building the Carrera shroud pieces, As you very well know very challenging hand work
at least 30 times front and back halves bolts on and un bolts to make sure all air channels are in the line .takes us part time 2 months to get one unit done.

Re: 4 Cam motor pictures
Jacques, Yes all the internal scrolls are as original made from 1mm aluminum as are the outside pieces. Martin, as to why I did this : I needed to offer this item to customers for whom I do work, this is the proper system for 550 Spyders which is my main business. I had one original steel set of tin and needed more and as I work with aluminum all day long it wasn't too hard to make the decision to fabricate the cooling tin from that also. Like all projects that fall into my orbit it was about halfway thru the development of the tooling that I finally figured out just how much work this is going to require. The first piece I made, and one of there more technically interesting , was the air intake - what the factory parts manual calls an " adjustment ring". It's made by metal spinning on the lathe. The difficulty is there is a reverse bend which will captivate the tooling once it is formed and therefore cannot be removed. The tooling I made has a removable ( in pieces ) center which allows me to get the part out . Metal spinning allows me to hold a good tolerance as the fit to the fan needs to be very close to minimize slippage. In addition to the cooling tin in the photo I made the entire car.

That’s outstanding. I’d love to come sit in a corner of your shop for a year and watch great things being created.

Hi Rainer
You are the King.
you realize that if you make that part in 2 pieces it makes it possible to quickly adapt to different housings.

Jacques, I work almost exclusively on 547 engines so I'm not familiar with all the variations of the air intake. I know there's a slight bolt pattern difference on the bottom mounting bolt, this being lower on an extended tab on the split shrouds. Never really studied a 2 liter piece.

Re: 4 Cam motor pictures
One way to tell the early 547 motors is the side port inlets and outlets for the oil lines - the serial number on the very early engines were stamped on the bellhousing flange. This was P90009 - original motor for 550 Spyder 550-0013 which was reunited with the chassis ten years ago.

Hi Jack
great pictures i think the serial no placement depended on weather the engine was meant for mid engine or rear engine. btw is there an "internal" no stamped?

Re: 4 Cam motor pictures
Jacques - I didn't know about an internal number but I was contacted by the owner of the Spyder that this was the original engine for and we basically swapped motors so this one would be returned to its original chassis. I got a plain bearing 1600 4-cam that had recently been rebuilt in exchange. Since the engine had long been removed from Dean Jeffries Carrera I felt that if I helped one car get its original race engine back it would be the right thing to do. It probably made his 3 million dollar car worth 4 million but the motor I had needed to be gone through and the gentleman who owned the Spyder also used to own a Formula One team so he had a team of mechanics that he could employ to rebuild the 4-cam. I think they had the engine restored and running within two months of it arriving in his shop.
