My 1955 has an original tranny number in the 5700 range so it appears that 6842 is not a pre-A.

Interesting Photo Don, it is pretty clear they did not get the memo on where to install the antenna Isn't this possibly just a repair shop? It just does not look very 'new'.Donald Zingg wrote: ↑Sat Feb 20, 2021 5:19 pmThis topic jogged my memory of a photo in Dr. Michel Thiriar's Speedster book. Mechanics are shown assembling a T-2 Speedster at a workshop in the Belgian Congo. The importer was Difco (D'Ieteren Freres Congo). According to the 356 Porsche Yearly Sales list at the back of Brett Johnson's 356 Porsche Restorer's Guide to Authenticity, only one new Porsche was sent to the Congo in 1958. Other local content included the battery, tyres and the windscreen. These 50 Porsche 356 cars were the only Porsches assembled by a Porsche Importer anywhere in the world outside of Germany!
Does anybody know what chassis numbers were used on those cars? Know for sure? And how about Australia? Anybody seen a published story of those cars.

Trans # 6842 should have been installed in a Aug 55 car, so I think that is a dead lead as far as a 1954 body car is concerned. Unless that is the only remaining original part on the car.

Pictures would be of great value to the members to help you solve the mystery.
The number stamped behind the spare tire, the door jam & if you can take a door card off that would be very helpful.
Shots of the entire car, motor and interior would at the very least put the car in the correct year.
These members have a plethora of information that they are eager to share

It all looks original to me. But the numbers make no sense. Hence the desire to see stamps in the other location, and also photos. Might help shed lightJeff Kutz wrote: ↑Sat Feb 20, 2021 6:22 pm The other numbers on this tag are 356/1500 and below that 1200 and below the 1200 is 525. Can you look at the rivets on this plate?. to my eye these would be hard to replicate.. Judging by the crud and visual inspection. My guess this is original with the car.
And no need to disassemble. Just turn on the flash on your phone and stick it behind the dash, under the seat front, etc until you get a decent photo.
The door hinge cover plate can be removed with 2 screws. It will have the Reutter chassis ID tag on the front (top), and the the last 2 digits stamped on the back at bottom.

Re: 1954 pre a
Quote from Brad
It is true that some cars were assembled in SA - We have ALL the Numbers of these cars - None carry a number anything like the one that is in question – that number is an enigma
All the S.A. Cars in the `knock-down batch carry the 5-digit Body Number not full 6-Digit Chassis Numbers (There was also a couple of cars, that received replacement Bodies – these bodies were supplied outside the knock-down batch system, probably due to accident damage)
There are a number of errors in the above statement
1) – The Knock-down arrangement lasted for 2 x years - 1962/63
2) - The number of cars supplied was - 61
3) - All the cars were T6 Cabriolets without Folding tops
4) - The number of cars damaged in Transit was 8
5) - They did not fall off a ship in the Suez Canal - they were destroyed in transit to the Suez Canal (I have no absolute proof of this BUT I have laboured through the Lloyds accident records and think I know the answer)
6) - It was only the bodies that were destroyed not the mechanicals
I have heard the story many times about using local products to complete the assembly of these Knock-down cars BUT having viewed MANY of these cars this does not appear to be the case.
They are ALL RHD, so over the years they have turned up in the UK on a regular basis and given us a chance to look them over
Australia - I do not believe that any cars were assembled in AUS although I do believe that Hamilton (the AUS Importer) was responsible for adding Parts (i.e. Adding Value) to a number of the cars.

Have you been able to take the hinge cover plates off to see if maybe they have the last two digits of the VIN?
James,
What do you think of the trunk floor VIN stamping
