1959-1963 Front Spindles

#1 Post by Leland Imler »

Having fun going thru all the parts I found.....LOL. Spending a lot of time looking at pictures and reading 356 Registry Threads....and trying to figure out what I've got.

Figured some here might enjoy seeing some early parts...recently found. There are parts out there!

So...came across these Front Wheel Spindles w/ Kingpins and carriers... They are Part # 111.405.357 and 111.405.358. Left and right.

Research has told me these are for Porsche 356 from 1959 - 1963? But have seen variations in the Spindle Shapes...

So....can anyone narrow down which model 356 these are for?

And.....from the pictures...are these NOS, or rebuilt...? They look NOS to me...

And should I measure the Inner Bearing size to help figure this out? 30mm? And which is the Inner Bearing....the holes in the Carrier Bows....? Or the base of the Spindle...?

Thanks Bill,

Amazing you know by sight! Much appreciated.

I've also found some rear "tubes and hubs" for disc brakes...and a full set of Calipers. So....maybe they all go together. The Tubes and Hubs...are used. The Calipers are pretty rough shape...

I'll post some more pics, would you take a look?

Unless it’s not a good angle those rear axle housings are for drum brakes~ A and B. I don’t see any pairs of caliper mounting lugs near the bearing retainer.

Ok, Thanks Martin,

I'll take another look at them. I think you are right. Difficult pic angle...hard to tell.

Research says....#212 is right side and #211 is left. 356 C and SC.

Hey Dave,

Certainly good news! Might have most of the parts to do a 356C disc brake conversion....!

Found a better pic....and you are right!

'A' backing plates have the lip as shown in the photo while 'B' backing plates use what was known as a 'double labrynth' , which was two lips on the plate. One around the circumference and the other about half an inch below, with a slightly smaller diameter. The B drums fit inside the channel formed by the two lips and minimized water intrusion. That is how you can tell the difference between them.

Slots or holes in axle tube shock towers indicate disc brake tubes as well as the ears for caliper mounts, Drum brake tube shock towers are solid without holes/slots.

JIM: It has been (8) 10 months since your post. We have the tooling to check the spindles and C carrier for both sides. If you pay the shipping both ways I will provide you with a full written evaluation of what you have. This is normally a $250 service. Al Zim 817*267*4451
