Glove Box Glycerin Bottle / Label Original vs Repro
Hi, All: I have come across a copy of the small booklet that accompanied the glycerin lock deicer bottle. When I attempted to auction it on eBay, here > https://www.ebay.com/itm/293779240205,
I received comments that the bottles and booklets were reproduced circa 2010, at least. I'm looking for info on how to tell original vs repro(s) of the booklet. I wrote to Carl Bauer, who sold the 2010 version through his company Orange Bar Products, but he has not yet replied. Sleuthing, I found a lot of dead links to originally posted photos and sub threads. If anyone can assist with details on this tiny, tiny bit of Porsche trivia, I'm grateful. As a sub-question, is this the physically-smallest Porsche publication ever? LOL
Regards,
Peter

Joris- Thanks for the quick info. The plot thickens! So, now we may have three repro versions.

Peter-
Here is a post by Carl on his reproduction of the booklet. Looks like on his reproductions he added OBP (Orange Bar Products) on the back of the little booklet. If yours does not have this feature, it would seem to rule out that your booklet was produced by him.

Does this effect top speed or just acceleration?

Paul-
Thanks for finding that link. No "OBP" on mine, so not that.

Here's more:
- Overnight, I found three more of these things!
- One is clearly used. All look the same to me.
- There's an article about the glycerin bottles in Registry vol 24, number 2, July / August 2000 by Chris Stavros with photos of claimed-original pieces.
- To me, all four booklets appear the same and as in the article.
- Comments, including those on the triviality of this pursuit, are all welcome!

Hello, All-
I've had some offline messages traded with interested people, but no real answer to whether these are reproductions. I'm still looking for and grateful for information.
Thanks,
P

Re: Glove Box Glycerin Bottle / Label Original vs Repro
The original booklets that came with the Glycerin Bottles are rare, I have only seen 2 or the 4-59 and 4 of the 11-59. These were the dates printed and 5M shows the number, 5000 at each printing. I have the one pictured that came in my 59 coupe, purchased in '68, so assume it is an original. One thing is the paper used to print the originals were two color, green on the outside, yellow on the inside, so the pages alternated green then yellow and repeated. There have been a few copies made. The most common copies were done by Orange Bar Products, and sold as part of a "kit" with a fuse pack and plastic document holder. Most of these reproductions were dated 11-59 or have a much newer date noted. Mike Keady "borrowed" mine and made 10-12 copies back in the late 80's, sold a few and included a few in some of the cars they flipped, these had the discolorations . As far as saying if your is an original being a bit worn I can not say for sure, but the ones that are "perfect condition" are not likely reproductions.

Steve,
I have also never seen a booklet that was not date 4 or 11 of '59. Would be interesting to see if anybody out there has one with a different date. It would suggest that they stopped providing the booklet with the bottle.

Re: Glove Box Glycerin Bottle / Label Original vs Repro
Joris, Your assumption that the factory stopped providing the booklets when they ran out of the 10,000 printed. I have never looked the owners manuals for differences during the 61-63 time period for added instructions on keeping the door locks from frezzing.
I have two friends who picked up cars from the factory and never got booklets with their bottles, one was in the summer of 62 T-6 Coupe, car and bottle is still with the family, the other was a 64 C coupe still with the original owner. If they only printed 10,000 of the booklets, and started issuing them in May or June of 1959 they would have run out before the T-6s were introduced.

Hi, all-
Thanks for all the contributions to this. I'm fairly convinced the booklet I have at #1, above, is original, but cannot say for certain. #'s 2, 3, and 4 are probably Tim Goodrich reproductions. I found a glycerin bottle w black top that is definitely not the reproduction marked "OBP." Also found a 911 project car! Headed to eBay. I'll put a link in the linked ads.
