Installing sound deadening in engine bay and trunk...

#1 Post by wolfgang geisler »

Hello all,
I have bought sound deadening kits for the engine compartment and the front trunk from one of the vendors. As I have no experience in installing the kits I am looking for photos, forum threads or videos in order to do the right things at the right time..... There is a one page leaflet in the kit´s packaging boxes but this does not say a lot. I have checked out the threads in the registry forum but was not successful in finding more Information.
Can you support me a little bit concerning that?
Thanks a lot, Wolfgang

Wolfgang,

I found the only way to do this was slowly and methodically, 1 piece every day, allowing it to dry fully in the engine bay before moving on.

I have heard others use spray adhesive to place the engine bay insulation, this did not work for me.

I found a high temperature glue from a company called Frost which worked extremely well.

When the engine insulation is fitted, it can be painted black, i cant remember the type of paint I used but someone else will add to this.

The trunk was a lot easier, dependant on what kit you have, the one I have probably is not correct, but it went in easily and looks ok.

Eric's car is a C. Yours is obviously much earlier car. It would help to know year. 54 maybe? Steve Harrison's 55 thread might help you on some things: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=21404

That looks good Eric. Did you use a heat gun to get it to form to the contours?

Eric and Doug,
thank you so much! My car is a 1956 T1. I will check out Steve´s thread! I am very thankful for all photos showing the installation of the sound deadening material kit in trunk and engine bay.

Wolfgang,

Your more than welcome, there will be others who can assist with your particular car, I’m just giving the broad strokes.

I didn’t use a heat gun, others do advocate the use, the particular glue is very good at holding the material when you push it into the area. It takes hold quickly, just simply going back and pressing until it goes off which isn’t too long.

]Eric, that's fantastic, thank you! I hope to get more pics and information in the forum. I try to find the glue over here but was not successful yet...[attachment=0]D7E1C443-0E24-4F86-AB18-8CB79CB56A25_1_201_a.jpeg[/attachment

DID YOU GET A KIT SIMILAR TO THIS FOR YOUR T1? https://www.stoddard.com/64455198101-nla.html Here is a picture I stole from somewhere. Steve mentioned in his thread that they were Black or dark tan I think. Steve made his own on page 6 of his thread.

Doug, no, my kit material is similar to yours. The one on the photo is from an earlier car (I think).
Wolfgang
PS: Stoddard says that these kits are used up to 1957 but my vendor here in Germany tells me that the later kit is correct for a 1956 car. I am not sure. Anyway I would like to install the later kit.

The picture is from my '56 T1 when I owned it. Manufacture date Nov 13, 1955.
I suspect your car has the tar impregnated paper and not the vinyl covered horsehair. I was able to restore and reuse some of the tarpaper in other parts of the car. I used petroleum-based (not water based) contact cement in quart (1000 ml) cans applied with a brush. Two applications to both surfaces allowing the material to almost dry between applications and also prior to installation. A heat gun is helpful with the original tar paper but I don't know if that would be the case with the new insulation kits.
For painting I've used an eggshell sheen black latex exterior house paint. I've also used eggshell sheen black chassis auto paint. I would think that the auto paint might work better with the new kit material. I applied it to the top surfaces prior to installation and did touch up later, as necessary.

The thinner black type for later cars from Stoddard doesn’t respond much to a heat gun. It gets slightly softer but is still unwilling to be formed into a compound curve.

Guess I know where I stole the picture I have from Tom. You! Since Wolfgang's car is a 56T1 he may have had an engine bay similar to yours .http://www.schnellautosports.com/porche ... hnell.html has a front trunk kit and used to have an engine kit also. I don't know how accurate they are. Is your car a later Golde sunroof Wolfgang? ? Per this thread the early 56s had wedge shaped: viewtopic.php?t=39265 The latest version of Brett Johnson's book has pictures of both types of engine insulation , Vinyl and Androplast, on page 176 with nice color pictures. And he states that by January of 56 the vinyl was ended I think. So it may be that you will need the build date of your car Wolfgang.

I have go the kit like shown in the link with impregnated paper. I think it's accurate for a later 1956 T1, but of course I don´t not know for sure....
