You can use a heat gun on the tar paper sound deadening. The Stoddard product has to be glued and painted. Check with Bill Perrone of The Parts Shop to see if he has any of the tar paper sound deadening in stock.

Mike,
I have bought the kits over here in Germany. Are there any photos of the installed kits on a T1?

I used the kit from Stoddard like Eric has. It is grey but absorbs gas/oil fumes so I sealed mine with Satin Rustoleum that I dabbed on with a sponge brush. My finished product looks similar to Eric's but not so nice.

This link has a picture of front trunk when Jack restored the Dean Jeffries 56 Custom car: viewtopic.php?t=1246&start=45 I bet if you contact Jack he would have multiple pictures of both front and rear.

Installing sound deadening in engine bay and trunk...
Yes, the later '56 T1 cars had tar impregnated paper like yours, Wolfgang. I have many photographs I took from a later '56 T1 with 27,000 original miles that I used to help with my restoration. Tim Goodrich took that low mile car completely apart and documented every detail and item in writing and with photographs and lent me those binders.
An interesting tidbit: Tim helped design the exact reproduction of the tarred insulation that was commercially available, I believe, from Bill Perrone at The Parts Shop. They were ready to use out of the box.
There are a few more pictures of my '56 by searching: A56356 photobucket
I spent a significant amount of time searching for the correct color and texture for the vinyl. Fortunately I had all the original engine and luggage compartment insulation to go by and was able to re-use the horsehair which was in excellent condition.

In an old link Rainer Cooney swears the stuff is correct for the front compartment and available by the meter to make your own, "Mercedes insulation can be had at a Mercedes dealer. Part # 000 983 29 91 sold by the meter. "

Re: Installing sound deadening in engine bay and trunk...
Wolfgang, Tim Goodrich was a car restorer and sadly is no longer with us. The '56 in question was originally owned by a fellow who was an engineer and worked for the railroad. The owner became too large to get into the car and so it sat outside near a small town in eastern Oregon. The fellow died and the new owner asked Tim to assist in its restoration which never happened. The pictures are probably with the car and its new owner now, whereabouts I do not know.
For treasure hunters: there is a 4 cam Carrera parked in the 2nd story of an eastern Oregon rancher's barn and the owner refused to sell it. The 356'er who made the purchase offer is also no longer able share this car's location.
Doug, you used to be able to get the horsehair from Germany in 3 different thicknesses. I've got the source info in a file, someplace. I purchased the vinyl from Robins but I don't think they have it anymore.

Jim, if you're really careful removing the insulation, it restores very nicely.
