I have bought it from a vendor in Germany. Most likely it comes from Stoddard but I am not 100% sure......

If it is more like felt, it probably came from Stoddard.

I have attached two photos of the material. Most likely you can tell the manufacturer from these pics. One more question: The two parts on the photos are meant to be mounted into the cabin of the car, not into the engine bay, right? Or am I wrong?

Looks like the same material as the kit I got from Stoddard.
Pieces 1 & 2 go over the top of the gearbox on the underside of the car. From the marks left by the glue on the original insulation it looks like piece 1 goes on first and piece 2 goes over it,
Good advice someone gave about using a heat gun - sort of a high power hair dryer and makes the panels so much more pliable.

Ahhh, thank you so much. I was completely wrong..... Buts it's a gearbox out job, right? Or can it be done with the gearbox installed?

I suppose it would be possible, but I'm sure it will be easier and you will get a much cleaner installation with the gearbox out of the way.

Hi Wolfgang, can I please ask you where in Germany you have purchased the sound deadening kit for your T1 engine bay?

Hi Alexis,
I have bought the material at www.classicparts.de (Mr Hofmann).
Just let me know if you need anything else.

Hi friends,
My BT5 is coming from metalwork and has been painted as you can see on this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3Nl_vHpfqI).
Now I need to concentrate on the installation of the sound deadening and if possible I would like to get some advice.
Kit has been bought from Classic-parts in Germany (same as the one shown hereinabove) but I need to know how it should be installed.
So from my understanding, the first step is to get a correct glue which can resist the heat and which will 'hold' the different parts in the engine compartment, in the car interior...). Next is to heat those pieces with a heat gun to allow them to get the correct shape. My idea is to buy or rent an infrared heater which should be better than hair dryer gun ;-).
If somebody knows what kind of product should I buy to glue the different parts but also if the infrared heater is a good idea. Working in a cold environment is not always easy.
Take care.

Olivier,

I used the Frost, high temperature glue, a great product, takes hold very quickly and the pieces can be pressed into the metal recesses and holds that shape without the need for heat.

Thanks for the details. Is Frost Adhesive available in the states?

Any updates on this topic? I'm getting started on mine and hope to draw on other's experience.
The kit I bought looks like the one above, but doesn't look like what was taken out, which had a thick fiber backing sort of carpet padding.
Any thoughts?

Elizabeth, there were differences between the Reutter and Karmann sound deadening. The Karmann bodied cars had jute backing on the sound deadening in the engine bay. Does the chassis number on your car start with a 1 or a 2? 1 is a Reutter; 2 is a Karmann. Who did you buy your kit from? I found the best is sold by Bill Perrone of The Parts Shop in Huntington Beach. Pricy but excellent quality.

I'm in Lomita and there are several of us 356 owners in the South Bay including at least two in San Pedro.
