Re: Members' Old Cars - (Not 356 Porsche)
'65 Beetle - my wife's first car that we still have. This picture was taken in the eastern Sierras on the way to LA when I missed my flight in Reno (long story) and I absolutely, positively had to be at work the next day.
Willy and the Cab getting ready to hightail it out of the Tahoe Basin during last summer's fires.

That was a tough time Greg. Glad you guys were spared. Went through something similar in 2011 with the Wallow fire in AZ. Fire burned all around us and to within 200 ft on the west side.

That's too close for comfort - the Caldor fire got within about 4 miles as the crow flies but fortunately there are a couple of mountains in between. Safe till next year ...Wes Bender wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 4:20 pm That was a tough time Greg. Glad you guys were spared. Went through something similar in 2011 with the Wallow fire in AZ. Re: Members' Old Cars - (Not 356 Porsche)
It was a major thing for us. My wife had just finished chemo and was in "zombie" mode, but was barely able to drive. I had the 356, a '55 Austin-Healey, the Lexus and my Tacoma there. No car trailer. We moved the Porsche down the mountain 8 miles and parked it, went back up just before they closed the highway and got the Healey and I drove it to Springerville with my wife following in the Tacoma. Went back and got the Porsche and drove it to Springerville where I parked it and took the Healey to a friends place in Concho Valley. Went back and got the Porsche, grabbed a hamburger and drove to the friends place where we flopped for the night. They weren't there, but we had prearranged to leave the classic cars in his garage if needed. Left the Lexus in the garage at the cabin with the keys in it. Insurance would cover it. We were evacuated for 16 days. Got back up and there were cinders and ash all over everything, but not a single pine needle had been singed on our place.
Everything was still smoky and they were still patrolling for hot spots for about a week. I don't particularly want to go through that again.

Another thought: It appears that the bad fire season California saw last year might have been enough for them to change some of their ideas on forest management. I won't say any more so we don't get into politics. What saved our bacon was the thinning that the USFS did around the town of Alpine in preceding years.
OK, to get back on topic, here's the Healey in front of the cabin.

Many old cars have come and gone over the years. This car now shares the garage with the "other" roadster.

Greg, they are reproductions of the Dunlop wheels that came on the D-type. Same 16" diameter but a couple of inches wider.

I'll add one of mine other old cars, this is my '68 911L, bought it around 2005 from New Mexico. I have been working on it on and off since 2008, maybe it is time to get it on the road.

Trond,
I thought only the '72s had the oil tank forward in that location. No? (I always thought putting the oil tank in that position was an excellent move. But Bob Garretson told me that the tank gets hot and heats the interior and that that is the reason Porsche moved it back after the one year.)

Agree on the 1972 only idea. But then, one never knows with Porsche.

Re: Members' Old Cars - (Not 356 Porsche)
I am preparing a 964 oil tank for the car, it is a a "tribute" to the 911R, we cut the oil filler hole in the fender and the car has 1970 model rear fender flares. I am trying to be true to the original, even got plastic door handles. Fiberglass fenders, hood, deck-lid, had fiber doors as well but they were a PIA to get right and I installed the original doors instead.
This is the one I am "replicating".

Does makes me happy to see that there are many British cars fans here. My classic car "career" started with a '58 356A coupe but I always had a British car aside, MGB, Jag E or big Healey, my cup of Tea.
As of today I have the following classic Brit cars, my '61 XKE and a '57 100/6. I bought the Jag in 1997 it was just a car I wanted to own while waiting for the perfect Speedster. That Speedster never came along. Apart from these running cars I am trying to finish a '68 Austin Cooper and a '62 XKE coupe.

Re: Members' Old Cars - (Not 356 Porsche)
Both gone by now, my daily driver '67 1500 Deluxe and the mint green hotrod with bigbore and big webers back in mid '90s.
Ski holders all year long, the beige VW 1500 took on rain or snow, I remember one easter at a mountain parking 1200 meters above sea maybe 1995 the then almost 30 year old car was the only that cranked and fired. Minus 20 C something during the night but the bug delivered. I had a few requests from not so lucky car owners with jumper cables but had to explain that my bug with a 6 Volt system would not help much in starting their "modern" cars. I must have driven 100K miles in that car, bought it low miles unfortunately it was stolen and banged up when I got it back.

Trond don’t you remember the sticker by the drivers door hinge boasting about the 12V system? VW was very proud, 67 was the first year.
