I seem to be having some problems downloading pics, from phone to lap top is OK. But from camera to lap top isn't. I'll keep trying.
Anyway this isn't exactly 356 stuff but it's what this 356 owner gets up to when he's not playing around with his car. This is my new Harley, It's a full custom softail based on Cole Foster builds. Nothing radical or outlandish, just a very clean minimal scoot. There is no indicators, no speedo, no front guard, you don't need them over here. I'm far from wealthy so I financed the bike by selling my '48 WL 45 flathead, sorry to see it go, it was a real trophy queen but I had had my time with the bike and I had a desire for something new, and this is it.

Been busy unbolting all the engine connections, pipes, wiring etc but before I pulled the engine and trans I wanted to check and see if the Rennspeed shifter would fit and work correctly in the car. The triangle of the shifter retention bolts is different from the 356 to the 911 but it's only the single rear bolt that has a changed location. I had to cut the shift rod that goes back to the gearbox and I noted that the base of the Rennspeed shifter sits somewhat lower than the 356 one. So this meant it would have to be placed higher on the centre tunnel. But this worked out fine as I had a Hoit plate which raises the stock 356 shifter a few cms. This I drilled and tapped a thread where the back bolt hole is on the Rennspeed shifter. So I use one 8mil bolt to locate the Hoit plate the screw the back Rennspeed hole into the plate then bolt the front two in the stock locations, and with the cut down shift rod everything works just right, and I can look forward to selecting the correct gears instead of previously doing something similar to stirring soup.

After playing around with the Rennspeed shifter, and the base plate I was alluding to was made be Willhoit by the way, I then started removing all the oil pipes, cables and wiring so I could pull the engine and trans out of the car. The 6 cylinder and box is really tight in the confines of the 356 so I hads to use my engine crane plus a trolley jack underneath to get the lump out which I did with a bit of shuffling back and forth. The 915 trans is a really heavy piece of kit which being located fairly central in the car obviously makes it handle quite well. I cleaned it up and got it ready to be despatched up to my gearbox specialist where it will be getting a new diff ratio, I going to an 8/31 instead of the existing 7 to give me a better top end, a new fifth gear bearing, a beefed up side plate and fig.8 bearing support and a general check over. I stripped the engine down to a long block but I'm not sure what course to take now. My original plan was to find a good 3.2 and chuck that in, or should I go to 2.7 barrels and pistons on my 2.4 with cam upgrade plus some headwork. Even if I find a 3.2 and they are quite rare I would have to get it torn down just to see if it's all ok. I have to say I'm more inclined to go for the 2.7 work even though this route may work out a lot more money.

Hi Jay, carbs were still spitting back all the way from CLM but they were fine when I was pretty much pedal to the metal and that was where I was most of the time just trying to keep us with my 911 travel companions. Back in Blighty I took the car over to CCK Historics which are way out in woods in Maresfield area, they have a rolling road there and a very good reputation for tuning old skool stuff like carbs. They sorted it out and found me a few extra bhp's as well. I haven't decided on what new powerplant I want for the 356, 3.2's are few on the ground, I have located a 964 engine but the seller wants to include a G50 with the deal which I don't want, although I could get it and flip the box. Also I do not know how the 3.6 compares in size and weight to my 2.4. I'd still like to do a job on my 2.4 to make it a bit of a screamer - case savers, line bored, shuffle pins, GE60 cams, 40/38 mil intake exhaust, but I'm not dealing with a s/b Chevy so that would be mucho money. My budget is about 20K and 3 to 4 will be going on the gearbox so I have to be a bit on the mean side to get my 250 brake. However, I have time on my side so I can wait until the right deal comes along

If you liked that splitty, how about this. I just had to get this especially being in Brumos livery (bucket list - go see the Brumos collection in Jacksonville) and I couldn't resist the Jagermeister RSR. They are both wicked performers on my slot track.

Our car is on the inside front cover of the latest registry. This is a real picture taken at its first autocross where we placed exceptionally well. Except for converting the car (1957 Coupe) to 12 volts and wider wheels everything is 356 based. The chassis has additional camber on the front wheels and is lowered to allow the tires to sit flat on the pavement. 1962 stock transmission, Raised shifter connected directly to the transmission, camber regulator, wider wheels, drum brakes, shoulder and correctly mounted seat belts (competition style). With fuel injection you can start the car standing beside the drivers door. This is a bolt together 356 creation, it is fulfilling to drive. Al Zim
On a chassis dyno (a warm Texas day last week) we made 140 engine horsepower. Plenty enough to drive the car faster than it ought to safely go.
It is vitally important (especially if you have a 356C Porsche) to have the suspension in Perfect condition. Including an alignment on a device engineered for Porsche.(not on your garage floor) Care is a necessity because the overall length of he 911 transmission and engine..How are you going to fit all that in a 356 body? As you can imagine I always get the magazine a little later than you folks but I shall look forward to seeing your car.
Regarding my engine search due to the increased weight of a 3.2, not really that much - 150lbs, but it would make a difference to the handling, so, I have made the decision to rebuild my 2.4. It will cost more mainly because it will be all outgoing but the knowledge of having a vitually new engine outweighs the cost factor. And it's only expensive when you first buy it, so they say. The shopping list will be high compression 2.7 barrels and pistons, possibly Mahle, a set of Wossner rods, Kent G60 cams, ARP studs and bolts and the heads will go to a old elf that works out of a secluded cave in the dark hills of Wales, known to work porting miracles. True!

So with my car up on the lift minus engine and gearbox, I started thinking about what other jobs needed attention. I cleaned all the running gear, sent the rear Koni coilovers away for a rebuild whilst getting the springs blasted and powder coated. Ordered a pair of Bilsteins for the front (although my ultimate aim is to junk the torsion bars and stock suspension for an A arm set up with rack and pinion steering) so the billys will have to do for the time being. Searched all over the front lower bodywork to try and see where water was entering the car following some serious rainfall. I did find a couple of holes. But the main thing I had on my mind was what can I do to the interior which quite honestly is a mess. The dash is carbon fibre with Autometer instruments so this stays plus the door panels are all carbon fibre so they stay as well but behind the seats which I want re-upholstered is those little seat pucks which are completely useless and some horrible vinyl panels to the rear sides. The roof has only some under floor matting stuck to it to keep the noise down but I still have all the sticks from the original roof lining so a nice one could be fabricated with these and first question: can you buy a roof lining kit anywhere which utilises the original sticks, and second question: would you fix sound insulation such as Dynomat onto the roof first, or in fact could you with a roof lining in situ. I do need some ideas regarding the rear seat section. I was thinking about boxing it in so to do away with the rear seat sections. For the sides I can get some material with a carbon fibre patten but it's rather a dark shade so possibly I could get the seats done in a lightish beige leather and continue this for the rear panels. I really don't know what to do, if you have any stunning ideas I would love to hear of them.

I made a further decision on my engine and I'm going to punch it out to 2.8 litre with 92mil barrels and 10 1/2 to 1 mahle pistons. Lightened flywheel and race clutch, it's going to be virtual RS spec and I've just got a Quaife LSD for the gearbox so it should be a right little screamer when it's all up together. But the waiting to get everything rolling is certainly bugging me some. I was looking round for things to do on the car and the first item on my list was to fit a brake servo. Obviously it couldn't be too big so I ended up with one for an MGB. The fittings are not metric but that just meant putting a UNF union on on end of the pipe and metric on the other. I fitted a VW type 2 master cylinder as well and as I thought that there might not be enough vacuum generated from my new engine with its nasty cams, I also fitted a vacuum pump to give some suck. I didn't want a bunch of additional pipework in the engine bay either. I really wanted a vacuum switch to operate the vacuum pump but I couldn't find any that were small enough to fit the bill. I could get one from China but I would have to buy a 100, not really. Anyway, I wired up a zero to 30 minute timer onto the master cylinder brake light switch. So when I touch to brake pedal the light switch kicks in the timer to the vacuum pump which remains on for a given period of time. Yet to be road tested, but it should work.
Next job got my headers back from being ceramic coated titanium colour and they also powder coated my Koni coil over springs. I had the threaded portion of the shocks passivated that nice gold colour and they look pretty cool bolted up on the car. I previously alluded to my interior, and last weekend, I ripped it all out and threw it in the trash bin. I got hold of some material and I began to make a start on re-covering the rear of the car. It's just a trial so far and I might just pull it all out again, but, for the moment, it's sort of what I had in mind for the back of the car.

All sounds good. You should find a master cylinder from an all disc brake car which I doubt the VW one is. The built in residual pressure valves will not be helpful on that one.

The master cylinder from the VW Beetle 1977 on will work. ZIMZ does not install single master cylinders. Nor do we install a customer supplied one. To date (end of February 2023) we have sold over 1300 of these kits. Karmann Ghia used disc bakes on their cars. Zim

Al, did a 77 beetle have four wheel disc brakes? The KG had them on the front only, so halfway correct for Graham.
