Hi Graham.
It looks great. When you are finished , will the car require an IVA test as it is so different from production ?
Ref the niggling problems, will it be ready for the Le Man Faux Classic at the Chateau. July is coming.
Cheers Jay

IVA? No mate, it's not that different really, well not to the layman anyway and I've always had a V5 for it. It's currently on sorn but of course tax is nil so that's here nor there. There is 8 of us all due to go the the Classic Le Mans but it has been put back to 2022. Didn't you know? We all got a message from the Frog organisers to ask if we wanted to hold our entries until '22 or get a refund. We have already got a huge manor house cum chateau booked up which has cost us 1500 quid so we all thought if it doesn't happen in '22 we'll all foxtrot oscar over to La Belle Francais and have a boys weekend. We nave a grand in the kitty so fillet steaks on the barbee, few bottles of Jack and a bit of porn on the telly. Lovely.
PS I have already got an insurance quote, OK I'm not exactly a teenager but how does 270 sovs sound to you. Cheap as chips I'll say.

Lots of terms in the last two posts that I don’t know. Regardless I’ll take a chance and agree with Mike.

Graham. ( Didn't I Know ! ) It was me that told you that this years Le Mans Classic was cancelled, don't you recall ?
That was why I referred to your Chateau as the Faux Classic! LOL. For the others , A UK IVA Test is required if a vehicle has been assembled with a certain amount of parts not used on the original car. ( Kit cars for example ) where it may be based on a VW Bug chassis but could have a different body, Engine, Gearbox and suspension, brakes, steering etc from the original car. Grahams car has very different Suspension, Brakes, Engine, Gearbox etc in his Outlaw 356. Thus the IVA Question . Mike You said that quote !

Ha ha, here's one for you. Alongside my modified 356 I'm constructing a Cobra kit car. Usual stuff, XJ front and rear suspension, 400 brake 289 with a 5 speed Tremec to swap cogs, repro Halibrands. The body is a fibreglass Unique Autocraft Dax job but on my V5 it states 'Ford Cobra' I'm not telling you how but you must have sussed it out that I am one dodgy geezer, and I, most certainly, am a tit man.

Fun and games this week, got the o/s bank of Webers stripped right down and found all sorts of crap in the tubes and dirty jets. So after emptying a couple of cans of Gumout carb cleaner (good stuff) a quick blow dry and some new gaskets it was running double sweet. Unfortunately we all got a bit carried away with the way the engine was, at last, running so well that giving it lots of beans coupled with not noticing that the oil pressure has risen to 90 psi it suddenly blew the gasket out of the oil filter and dumped about a gallon of crude onto the workshop floor. Right good laugh actually, what had happened was the oil relief valve had stuck, not badly it was really only a tide mark from non use. Anyway this got gently honed out just to clean the internals and a lighter spring fitted. On re-start the engine was fine with oil pressure back down to 60 But the oil was still frothing. The oil tank then got removed and cut apart with a newly positioned return pipe coming into the side of the tank then pushing the oil through a baffle affair with a change to the pick up pipe from the bottom of the tank to the side with a swan neck to stop any oil draining down to the engine when it's shut down. Finally the oil filter chambers got enlarged to assist flow. There was other stuff like get new pipes and fittings and drill the body for alternative mountings and the other job that got done that was slightly engine related was to fabricate a new bracket and spindle to mount a 911 throttle linkage back to the Webers where previously I had used a section of bicycle cable, hey, it worked, but it's a super sano now. That's all folks but I have done a load of work on my Cobra as well, mounted pedals, front body mounts, door hinges and the headers are all done Plus I managed to finish the painting of my new summerhouse, thank heavens for Red Bull!

You are building the frame? Since it’s got a 289 can I assume it has the prettier un-flared fenders?

Hi Martin, you sound like you are pretty much on the ball when it comes to Cobras. I bought the chassis, it came as a kit with the body but it was set up for the little aluminium Buick 215ci engine, so those mounts got cut off asap and I fabricated s/b/f mounts in their place, actually I cut those off later as I wanted to move the engine back a few inches because I wanted a 5 speed Tremec instead of my original toploader. I bought this Tremec the last time I was in the States at the Bakersfield reunion drag meet and it was rebuilt by Dave Hirata, 'A' fuel dragster driver out of Lowell Indiana. Dave's father was half of the top winning team of Hirata and Hobbs back in the sixties. History lesson over, I do agree with you that the original body style of Cobras is a more attractive car but my body came with the big arches so those are staying. I would love to have a 427 side oiler but these engines are super rare so the 289 it has to be. I could have got hold of a 460 but they are real boat anchors and at the time the excellent Edelbrock heads for this engine had not become available plus you have to spend a bunch of money to make these things rev. Over here the Ford is as popular and just as widely used as the Chevrolet however my little 289 may be a bit too much for the street. The bottom end is all tricked out with 10 1/2 TRW forged pistons, I spent a month on the heads which are CC'd and ported to the max with Moroso 194 and 160 valves Isky double springs and pushrods and Crane roller rockers. It's got a mean TRW circle track cam, Torker 2 manifold and a Holley 650 double pumper carb. I do have a milder 302 that I can slot in if I get bored with a 1500rev tickover and 10 to the gallon (or less). The other headache on the Horizon is what colour should I paint it. The old red was done ages ago and it's been sitting outside and looks like a barn find, I might just leave it as is.

Graham:
Just curious: how would you rate the DAX kit, and are they still being made? I agree with Martin that the slabside Cobra has that original AC look that is hard to beat, but I also agree with you that cutting your flares is too much of a bother—better to get a different ready-made body.

Many folks overpower these and end up not driving them, as they are a handful and also get too hot. The 289 is a nice block to use, produces a balanced sports car, so I would go with under 350 hp and enjoy the ride. And if you need any K-code blocks, I have a couple that I'm not using.

I know for a fact that my Dax was the seventh body they made and the mould was taken from a genuine Cobra that had been raced to the extent that the body is slightly off centre because the Cobra had been involved in a bit of agriculture at one of its last races. They are not made any more, there are a few bodies on the market which have got buggered up dimensions like bigger doors and stretched bodies but there is is crew manufacturing the original narrow bodies and they are gems. We in the UK generally screw up anything and I reckon the best bodies are made in the States now. Regarding available power I am hoping I can be satisfied with about 350 horse power especially in something around the 1000 kilos mark which should be the finished Cobra weight. I have a pal with a 700 horse power '69 Camaro, it was a super gas car on the track before he put it on the street and it's just an animal, it can break the Mickeys loose at any speed up to a ton and torques sideways with the slightest provocation. Fun for 15 minutes, and did I say 5 to the gallon!! I have noted your K code blocks, - I know some roundy round circuit racer guys with FIA early Mustangs and Falcons who would be very interested in those.

Hi John, dunno whereabouts you are in East Sx but us DDKers are having a cars and cofee meet at the Milk Churn in Rudgwick this Saturday morning and then some guys are going off to Goodwood for the Retro Rides meet. I'll be at Goodwood on the Sunday where we have got dedicated parking and I think a few will be having a blast round the track. As I mentioned it will be mainly DDKers and mainly 911's but if you run a 356 come on down. BTW the Churn is Lynwick Street RH12 3DH and I'll be in my red 911.
