Today was the "Maiden" trip to Emeryville for the monthly EASY cars & coffee. I now have about 250 miles on the car. I spent a couple hours New Years day driving the car while my buddy was mapping the fuel injection with a laptop while cruising down the freeway. We got the fuel map pretty close and will fine tune the fuel injection after I get the engine broke in and can make some full throttle runs. So it's back on the road after 2 1/2yrs. I still need to finish up the upholstry & a few other things.

I really like how in spite of lots of modifications you kept it fairly plain and normal looking. It’s very tasteful.

Hello Michael,
What type of shock absorbers are you using in the rear.
You are using the trailing arms of a 912 and the lower mounting point is slanted and is not in line with a standard 356 shock absorber, which goes straight up.
Or are you forcing the bushing in the rubber to align it with this mounting point ?

Hugo: When I did the conversion during fit up I noticed the shocks were not straight up & down. I moved the lower trailing arm shock mount back and wound up with them about 1/2" towards the back of the car at a slight angle from perpendicular. The stock 356 shocks are too long so I looked at various shocks and wound up using a Honda Passport rear shock. I'll run these until they wear out or I lower the rear by another 3/4". At the ride height the car is now I think a shock that is 17 to 17 1/2" extended would be good with close to 6 inches of travel. The real answer I've found is to set the ride height and then get shocks that mount up with about 3 1/2" of compression at that point. One problem is the drop in suspension when you jack the car up so you can get the wheel & tire on. Too short and you have to disconnect the shock to get the wheel& tire on. Too long and you wind up bottoming on the compressed shock. Don't ask me why I know. By the way if you know anyone that need a set of new rear Bilstein shocks for a 356 let me know. Mike

I saw this conversion, you can see they forced the rubber and they did not use a 912 trailing arm, I do not know what type of trailing arm they used.

I was thinking on using a shock absorber with a swivel joint in the lower mounting point , but I have not found a manufacturer of those shock absorbers.

Hugo: I think the forced rubber is because the shock mounting hole is at an angle compared to the shock hole a swivel mount would help in that case. When I extended the shock mount I made it so it is at the same angle as the shock mounting hole. The stock 900 trailing arm shock mount is at an angle not perpendicular to the trailing arm. Mike

Did you modify the mounting points for the rear brake hoses ? The ones that go on the trailing arms.

I left the mounting points for the rear brake hoses alone. The brake lines and hoses are all early 911/912 stock parts. Mike

I did full power leather recaro seats along with a 2.8 twin plug and 901 gearbox. I have never owned a 356 but driven some and the handling is incredible with the 911 suspension and disc brake conversion

Very nice. Did you widen the rear bodywork? I spotted the 911 headlights, the 900 headlight rims fit the B & C fender contours much better.

Widened 2 inches on either side to allow for 16x7 wheels and 205/50/16 tires
