Is there a gasket between the screen and the fuel tank on the tank side? I have the oblong gasket in place but wondered if the screen also had a gasket on the other side of the screen flange.

The flange at the base of the screen is pinched between the tank fitting and the petcock, with a gasket ring against the tank. When I did a VW last summer I had to squeeze the filter screen smaller so it would go through the ring. Not sure if that’s your issue or if that was because I was using a T6 filter on a VW.

Paul - cleaver, simple solution. Next time I clean the cup I'll see how many threads mine will go in and if like yours I'll cut it to fit. David

David,
Why not just machine an aluminum washer to take up the space? Or why not rethread the filter?
BTW a bottoming tap will allow threading to the bottom of a hole.

It’s not hard to make a passable bottoming tap by grinding off the tapered part of a regular one.

I think that this is the one from my 52. It looks
Ike Vince’s. Krakow ?
I couldn’t get it rebuilt in the 80’s and put in a Soddard replacement, I’d like to get it right as the car gets back on the road.

Mark your 52 should have the small VW fuel tap. Brett Johnson has a great article about fuel taps in this months registry magazine.

Is the link I posted above. You will have to look up a pre 53 beetle or bus. Some of the bus ones will have a rlever on the valve, the lever is easily removable. You could use the one you have its just won't be correct.

Here is the bus one with the lever.

6mm taps are not convertible to 8mm. Get an 8mm tap. VW used these through 1952. Porsche used them for another year before going with their own design.
