John, these wheels aren't old original Magnesium wheels. They are safe lightweight modern aluminum castings thanks to CAD identical in appearance to the 1960's Magnesium racing wheels you thought they were.

I see the center hole area is slightly different. Good that yours are strong and safe!

As of today, this thread is 24 pages long, dating back 14 YEARS! There are a lot of great looking and a few questionable choices displayed here. There are stock, natural, painted, polished. and even modified VW wheels on these pages, But, no one has put a set of 924 Turbo (BBS style baskets) on their 356. I doubt that they'd look all that good, but with everyone trying to have a different look, I'm still surprised that they haven't been tried.

Re: Stock 4.5" wheels widened to 6"
I know .. very old topic ,.... and old message .. but ... Ryan, who has widened the wheels ... ?
Would love to get an address here in Europe ... so if anyone knows - I really appreciate adresses, because I want to widen an original KPZ 4,5 12/59 set of our BT5 car.

You can have the centers cut out of your 4.5" x 15" wheels and have the centers cut out of suitable 6" x15" wheels, determine the desired offset and have them trued and welded. Have had that done several times, over the years, first time in 1968 on my '64 hot rod VW in Des Moines, IA. Bit of trivia, we all used 7" Chevy station wagon wheels from the junkyard and ran Goodyear Polyglas tires, F70 in back and D70 in front.
Hopefully you will be able to find a good shop that has done this many times over the years and uses a dial indicator to ensure trueness. Original sets of date matched wheels are valuable, you might consider saving the original dated wheels and either buying a set of 5.5" aftermarket wheels or finding mismatched wheels and having those widened, but your car, your choice.
Good luck,
STP

You can easily buy bare rims that your old centers can fit, saving the trouble of cutting up two sets of wheels.
I bet those tall tires took the edge off the acceleration in your VW. I once put bus tires on a 36 Hp bug, it was unacceptable.

I must warn you that there were very bad, brittle Fuchs wheels made and they can be recognized by the very grainey metal quality these wheels unlike the real FUCHS WILL shatter like glass under extreme impact. The real FUCH Will just bend. Cavet emptor! Alan The Stable.
