The volume knob is used to switch the radio on and off. Press once to turn the radio on and again to turn it off. I'm not an iPhone guy so can't answer your cutoff problem. My Blaupunct is backlit, but it isn't very bright.

Thanks Wes,

I thought myself that the volume knob would switch the radio on and off but for some reason it does not.

I just went back to the car and tried pressing the volume knob firmly, it switched the radio off, the red light went out but when I released the pressure on the knob the light comes back on and the radio switches back on.

I had the same problem with my radio from the same source. Had it repaired by Radioman here stateside. Don't know if they replaced or repaired the switch. Expensive but sending it back wasn't economically feasible.

I had a reply from Matthias, below, not really sure what it means.

😊It may be that you have mounted the radio button too low. then you can't switch the radio on and off properly.😊

I think possibly he means the nut on the shaft, that holds the radio into the dash is out too far and preventing the knob from pushing in far enough.

Easy to check, take the knob off and push on the shaft. That wasn't the problem with mine. Switch was bad and acted just as yours is.

He's talking about the knob. If it is too close to the radio, there isn't enough room to switch on and off. Move the knob a bit more away from the face of the radio.

The radio does not switch off because the knob is mounted too near the radio.
Loosen the screw and pull the knob back to allow the switch to go "over center" and change status.
It is also a good idea to replace the screws with Allen screws that are a lot stronger.

Guys thank you for the replies,

Mike, John I did exactly that and the radio now switches off and on, so thats good.

In relation to the backlight, there is no backlight, I can live with that, I thought it may be so dim that I could not see it, but that is not the case.

Mathhais has mentioned that the intermittent problem with the iphone may be a bad connection, lint in the charging port of the phone, I will clean out the port and see if this makes any difference.

Wes, I am glad it was the easier option, I did not want to remove the radio, it is tight under there.

The radio would need to come out to change the light bulb. A project for a later date.

My 64 sc came with a frankurt Delux radio with a input option, by pulling out the station changer knob it will mute the radio and allow the input of any device you hook up to the plug port on the side of the radio. Upon sending it out for repair the service guy said it was an opton for a victrola use in some Mercedes. I used it many times with a walkmen.

Yes Mike, you are right, a job for another time, maybe when the radio stops working completely.

I have had a look at the charging port of the iphone, cleaned it out with a needle, no lint came out, I keep the phone in a leather case which covers the port so nothing gets in there.

I have attached a video showing what is happening, the lead that Matthias supplies connects into the side of the radio and has a toggle switch which is mounted under the dash, this is switched between the radio and the iphone.

The radio works perfectly, hit the toggle to iphone, the music plays for a few seconds and cuts out, maybe a bad toggle lead, maybe an aftermarket apple lead to the iphone which was supplied, maybe something else.

I am no expert in this type of thing, any ideas?
