Here's a nice Convertible D I found when I was just graduating from college in 1984. Long Beach, California. Straight, dry, and original. A very nice car.

Color was Glacier White, which is actually a light green. Black cloth top - very slightly faded, and black interior.

Asking price was a (staggering for me at the time) $12K.

As a poor college student, I exhausted every relationship to see if I could scrape the funds together. Could only come up with half the money and I was crushed. I knew cars well, and even back then, it stood out as an exemplary example.

Didn't want it for the investment (who knew?), I just wanted to drive such a magnificent piece of machinery and move up in life from my 1961 VW bug ragtop.

It would be about a year later I purchased my first 356, a 1964 C. But I've thought about that Convertible D at least once a week for 36 years now...

Ah yes...the cars we let get away. I passed on a Speedster on a used car lot c.1969. 4 flats and a dead battery and one tiny ding in the right front fender. When I asked to hear it run, the salesman said he thought it had a shot rod. I told him I needed a driving car to get to work. I was a drug store clerk at the time; not exactly making big bucks. As I was leaving, he was begging me to take it away for...$400! Yah...the cars we let get away....

Fast forward to 1971 and I'm at Fort Carson, Colorado with my '58 coupe. I see an ad in the paper for a '51 Roadster in Denver...$95.00! I didn't look at it as I had no way to get it home much less to the base. Oh well...

Thanks for the comments and corrections to my post... All these years I thought it was a Convertible D because I remember (thought I remembered) the for sale sign. This is the only picture I have, but I'd agree it looks like a Cabriolet. Funny how my mind can think I know something, yet I can stare right at something contrary for years and never see it - alerting me to realize I've been wrong all along. There's probably a lesson there. 36 years I've looked at this car and never noticed - yet I pride myself as "having a eye for detail". I'm humbled...

I must have mis-remembered the ad, as I'm sure the seller knew what he had.

Appreciate the corrections CJ and Mike.

A week or two back when I had them out to wash. The garage was getting too claustrophobic.
