Why are my headlights Yellow?

#1 Post by Michael Pawelek »

Just noticed today while working on that pesky ground on the front right turn signal light that my headlights are a bright yellow. According to records I have my 1964 SC was shipped to the U.S. in 1967 from Switzerland and there have been two more owners before me two weeks ago. The 356 still had the speedometer in Kilometers and now these yellow headlights. Is this a European item and is it legal here in the U.S.? Curious as to how they look at night…..😊

Yellow headlights were mandatory in France for a long time until 1993 and if your car was resident in Switzerland then it is likely it spent time traveling in France where it would have been convenient to have headlights that conformed.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

You should be able to just swap the bulbs. I’m pretty sure Jeffrey Felllman sells led bulbs if he still stocks them, or his company Classico Wheels.

Could be yellow bulbs for Euro lights, but it could also just be low voltage. You more than likely (99% certain) would need P45t bulbs. They exist in stock incandescent, halogen or LED.

I see the P45t are sold in many places but not in 6v.

Then they are well worth it. Couldn’t find them on your site. I have your sealed beam version

Here are our Euro LED headlights (p45t bulbs) in action at the Mille Miglia in Italy. The 356 passed the technical 'scrutineering' session with flying colors.
