1955 Coupe

#1 Post by John Wurner »

A friend has a 1955 Coupe in good condition, numbers marching engine and transmission. VIN 53103. Released from the factory Jan 27 1955.
Is this a Continental?
He has asked me to help him sell the car, so I am doing some preliminary work.

Hi John. Other than owning a 55 Cabriolet race car that was far from stock I don't know much about Continentals. I think that only certain cars got that badge, not all 55s. I also get the impression that many cars claiming to be Continentals did not leave the factory that way. I am also not certain when Ford convinced Porsche to stop tagging the car that way. It is all very muddy, I think. I never really understood the obsession about the Continental or European especially when it seems so easy of fake one. Maybe somebody can set me straight and change my mind.

Hey John,

The Continental was 99% US market, or wherever Hoffman had his hands in the business. I believe only a handful non-US spec MY55 cars and virtually all US specs were badged continentals, they were actually called Porsche Continental in the ads and no longer 356... so theoretically the 55 and early 56 Europeans were the only non-356 356 :)

Tell your friend to market the car as the very rare NOT a Continental.

My 55 Cabriolet was sold new in Germany. It was special order paint and a 1300 Super of which less than 30 1300 Super engines left the factory that year. Also I guess a rare NOT a Continental.

Highly likely you are right, Cliff. Going by the 50/50/50 rule (50% of all 356s built came to the US, 50% of those went to California and 50% survived) chances are a lot more Contis survived than non Continental 1955s.

Hi, there is a continental registry and it is managed by Jim Wayman. you will find some information there, including a database with chassis number. the chassis number 53103 is noted in the register. if there is Hoffman on the kardex you can be almost certain that it is a continent. otherwise contact Jim.

53103 is a Continental. It was delivered in silver metallic paint with blue vinyl upholstery. It sold on Bring a Trailer in November 2021 for $169,000 wearing red paint with tan upholstery. Please have the current owner contact me thru the Continental website mentioned above so I can add him to the database.
