5704B Upholstery Color

#1 Post by Dave Erickson »

The Kardex for my 59 Conv D is shown below. The paint color was originally 5704B elfenbein. However, the upholstery is also listed as 5704B. What was the original color of the upholstery? What is the meaning of the "B"?

Thanks Jules. Were there additional letters, like 5704C?

Not for the T2 unless it was a special order color like green.

The T5 and later cars got more options, A through H i believe

I think that chart is valid from 1957 through 1959. Prior to 1960 the color code followed by A & B meant that you had a choice of interior option A or interior option B for a particular paint choice. From 1960 model year it appears that the system changed and the A & B were not choices but were actual codes for a color of interior:
A Red rot
B Black schwarz
C Brown braun
D Beige beige
E
F Blue blau
G Green grün
H
K Fawn rehbraun

My guess is that the document is for T2 cars or possibly only 1959. There is no Signal red shown and that was a common color in 1957 and before.

Right, it is for the 1958 model year. From here:

with the comment that the letter is "from Hoffman-Porsche Car Corportion, the U.S. Distributor for Porsche Cars, dated September 1, 1957."

Signal red is a T5 and later color?
