4 Digit and very early 356 issues. 1950 and 1951.

#1 Post by Erich Wagner »

Hello Guys,

after almost 6 years of driving my 4 Digit with a non synchro "crash box" do i think about to change the transmission to a "part synchro" VW transmission from the mid 1950's. 1st gear, no synchros, all oterher gears are synchronized. (No i have no 519 Transmission in stock..)
For all the folks who want to know why? I am driving my car a lot and it got a bit stressful in nowadays traffic to double clutch, hit the gas pedal and use the turn signal switch which is sitting on top of the dasboard. Specially as we get more and more roundabouts and all this, paired with the weak original break system..

Does somebody of you guys know if it is a "bolt in" swap? Do i have to change the nose piece, the shift linkage?

It would be great to get as much infos as possible.

That is my little 356:

Erich,

Rancho makes a nose cone so you could install a fully snycro style VW transmission. You will need to do some research on the gearing but it’s a pretty straight forward swap.

Hi Erich
Just call me. We normally put early 2-3-4 synchro beetle gear boxes In split cars. Easy transformation on 3rd case and vintage look with low costs. Albert info@classic-parts.fr

519 Box inständig of crashbox is no Good. Must change Everything from Shift lever to box nose. For synchro you gear change you need force. And this is not possible with the split mechanisms.
Best is a beetle Ovali 2,3,4 sync box.
