Video of Carrera 4-Cam Engine on the Dyno

#1 Post by Barry Brisco »

Courtesy of Alan Klingen, see this page http://356registry.com/techinfo/researc ... video.html for a link to a MPEG-4 file of a Carrera 4-cam engine on the dyno at The Stable in San Francisco.

This video, in MPEG-4 format with Dolby 5 channel audio, shows two dyno pulls of a Carrera 4-Cam engine at The Stable in San Francisco. The first run was from 2500 rpm to 7000 at full throttle and load. The second was a full throttle and hold at 7000 rpm for a few seconds at full load. Note that in the first pull, mid-way through, the throttle rod connecting the carburetors briefly exhibits a standing wave oscillation, which probably creates significant wear on the rod attachment points. Was Porsche ever aware of this? Perhaps not.

Here is the link to the 7.5Mb video file:

Depending on the speed of your internet connection, it could take several minutes to download. (By the way, this video and the sound was recorded by an Oscar-winning sound engineer who happens to be a Porsche enthusiast and 356 owner)

To view the video you will need video player software on your computer that can read the MPEG-4 format. You may already have the necessary software, but if not, the Apple QuickTime video player software for Windows or Mac can be dowloaded for free, click here.

Barry,

That's some motor that Alan's tested, it sounded great! I also like his engine test bed.

The thread is 15 years old and the links don't work, at least for me.

Which vertical shaft Porsche engines are your specialty? Was there some rotary mower that I’m unaware of?

Helicopter engines. Vertical shaft is an artifact of the Carrera Book in the translation.

I wondered if it meant those, but I thought they were not fully vertical.
