52 bent window 1500 door pockets or not?

#1 Post by Jules Dielen »

Did the 52 bent window cars all have door pockets? Something tells me those were only on the 1500S cars (USA deluxe) and not on the lower engine versions?
Jules

Water pumps are for windshield washers only.

All 1952 model year cars had door pockets, as did the first 1953 model year cars regardless of engine. These were the deep door pockets not split down the center. They were different from the split-windodw predecessors and the 1954 onward ones that were shallower at the ends.

This type of door pocket started on the last split-window cars in 1952 were used up through coupe ~11950, well into 1953 model year. After that, no cars had door pockets until the 1954 model year brought them back. This was Porsche's way of saving money and time with Reutter. It was one of the many modifications of the interiors for 1953 model year that made it faster and cheaper for Reutter to deliver cars. It was a way of offset the cost of the new engines, new synchro gearboxes and new bodywork all introduced in 1953.

Here's a photo of 11936 with its original door pockets.

My #11994 does/did not have door pockets -- built 11.52 as a '53 model.

Is it known when exactly in 1952 the door pockets on the split-window cars were no longer subdivided the center?

Here is the original door panel from a car that was parted out in the 70’s.

Jules,

You might be correct I was going from memory. I will have to go back in my emails and see if I can figure out the chassis number the door panels came from. They were on a pair of doors Spencer Harris had since the late 70’s.

The last split-window cars did not have the divider. It went away sometime between coupes 11109 and 11237, based on existing cars, though there aren't many originals remainging. The first bent-window coupe was 11361.

The original blue door pocket that Tony shows above is from a late split-window coupe with the final digits "41", so possibly 11241 or 11341. Not from 11141, as the car these came from was scrаpped.

Thanks Tony & James, the reason I‘m asking is my cab, completed on 52.2.27., which is due for interior work soon. If I am interpreting the data correctly, the door pockets on this car must be without a divider.

With cabriolets, I actually have better data for you. 10266 has its original dividers on the door pockets. The last split Reutter cabriolet was 10270. So it's possible all the split Reutter cabriolets had dividers, but perhaps Reinhold Plank would have better data, as he recently finished restoring one of the last split Reutter cabriolets.
