Darn good question, Dave. If my CRS brain remembers correctly, when we disassembled my friend Jesse's '58 Speedster (r.i.p.) with the factory installed radio, I don't recall the Y bracket. I suspect the hanger and bracket under the dash started with the T-5's but I'll let others more knowledgeable weigh in on your question.

Speedsters, convertible D's and Roadsters were not set up for radios, so I am not surprised there was no bracket in your friend's Speedster. What about similar vintage coupes and cabriolets?

No opening in the dashes of the Speedsters, Convertible D's or Roadsters. There was a special bracket attached to the lower edge of the dash. The power pack was located in the passenger side footwell. Maybe people with A models will weigh in. When I get a chance, I'll look under the dash of his '59 coupe we are finishing for him.

If the original “baffles” are missing from your Speaker Enclosure's, you should add them.
The sound will be softer and more mellow. Richer.
Without them, imagine the sound from a Speaker in a metal bucket, tinny and raw.

David,

Thats a great call, Mike also mentioned this to me.

I have seen the horse hair baffle, any idea how it is held in place or does it just push in and you mould it around the shape by hand, or is it possibly glued in place.

I sparingly used some spray on adhesive to hold them in place. Adam (Unobtainium) has a pair on eBay.

The factory piece is big enough to stay in quite securely, or at least my T6 ones are.

PERSONAL OPINION: I have always thought that driving a 356 without a radio was the upinity of the 356 experience. Al Zim

The oxford dictionary came out for that one!

I do agree Al, but some def leppard when your flying around those bends doesn't hurt every so often.

I am planning to install the speakers later this week and would like a little advice.

At present the speaker recess is covered by carpet, I will need to cut into the carpet to make the hole for the speaker.

This is what it looks like at present.

Is there any particular way this should be done, should I cut neatly around the perimeter of the hole as in Davids picture above.

The speaker edge would then be resting against the edge of the carpet and the 4 screws attached, does this sound correct?

This is the speaker I am installing, recommended as a suitable replacement in an earlier thread.

I plan to pop the black grill and place the original sort of round grill fronts in place to finish it off.

I picked up the other parts that were missing from the radio, spacers, metal front, in line fuse, and speaker cables.

Thanks Mike,

The instructions are fairly straightforward, run your hand over the lining on the right and left loudspeaker cups and cut out the lining , I am guessing you simply cut around the perimeter of the hole. the carpet is flush with the perimeter of the hole.

I wonder if you can just cut an X or star pattern and fold the flaps of the carpet back into the pocket.

Mike,

I actually thought that myself, but wasn't sure if this would work.

I could give it a go initially.

For what it's worth I pulled the carpet, installed the speakers and put the carpet back on top. I can still hear everything OK, maybe had to turn the volume up a bit.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.
