What is the order or reinstalling the engine tin?

#1 Post by Greg Spreeman »

I could probably figure this one out on my own but, my engine tin is freshly painted so, I want to approach it gingerly. I installed the half moon shaped piece behind the pulley. What pieces come next?

Cylinder and head covers with flat end tin. Piece under fuel pump, then fan shroud followed by carb side pieces. Do not tighten any bolts or screws until all pieces are in the right place. Hex bolts in all vertical positions and cheese head screws in horizontal.

Assumes you have already put the bottom piece on prior to putting the pully on.

Do not tighten any bolts or screws until all pieces are in the right place. Head bolts in all vertical positions and cheese head screws in horizontal.

A little more help.

David, according to Bildtafel 1/5 in the 356B factory parts catalog item 30 are vertical cheese head screws, items 20, 32 and 37 are horizontal hex head screws, 8, 10 and 12 mm long, the reverse of what you stated. Jürgen

Hex head screws go into vertical positions such as fan shroud and cheese head screws in all horizontal pieces such as engine tin. Ten hex head screws by my count.

You are correct, David. I was looking at the orientation of the screw, not the orientation of the item that the screw holds. Jürgen

Gentlemen,

Very helpful. Before I get to the tin, I realized the oil filter canister was full us sludge when I first got the car and I put in some kitty litter to help extract it. Did that months ago. Just discovered my kitty litter soaked clump sitting in the oil filter canister after I installed in on the shroud. Another thing I came across is, the lines that go to/from the oil filter canister are so expensive!

Thanks everyone!

Start w/the fan shroud (after the pulley's 1/2 moon piece).
I disagree w/the hardware notes; Cheese head screws vertical
and hex head bolts horizontal.
The horizontal side plates are mounted along w/the around-the- manifold vertical side plates.

From the B parts manual, section 1/5: 25 cheese head screws ; 10 hex head bolts.
