Tow Hook Locations

#1 Post by Craig Geiger »

Likely people who race 356's will have first hand experience, but anyone know if this location for a tow hook would hold up pulling a 356 onto a flatbed?

Appears to be using the bumper attachment points in the front.

Also, how about on the rear shock lower mount? I've had cars with a tie down mounted to the rear lower shock bolt. Granted, that wasn't used to pull the car up a flat bed but would that work on a 356 in lieu of any factory mount (in the rear)?

I have no first hand experience, as I'm still early in my project, but the bumper mounts seem to be a sturdy section of the body and I suspect this set up would handle tie down/light towing duty. (In fact, I think I'll fab up something similar for my car once I get to that point.) I can't speak to the rear shock mount... again, no first hand experience.

That spot should work ok on an unrusted car but the bumper mounting is only approximately 18 gauge steel so be gentle.

I had an SC that had been set up for short track racing by the pervious owner and included a home made tow bar that attached to the front of the battery box. I towed it several times without a problem. If your car and battery box are solid and not Bondo specials you should be fine.

The tow loop on the battery box is what I use, although that bumper mount would also work although it is off center. I use the hoop in the rear.

You want your tow hooks to be more than sturdy! Available soon a plated rear tow hook that mounts securely to the bottom bolt on the rear shock absorber. It is oversized to hold the rubber on the bottom of the shock in place. Contact the parts department and put your name on the list. Very reasonable priced. On the front: You are pulling the car with at 8MM bolt that is attached to sheet metal THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! Purchase 2 straps that you will loop over the torsion bar and extend past the bumper. This will keep you from encouraging any body damage. DO NOT PULL FROM THE TOW LOOP. al zim

Al,

Will your product sit at the level where a tow strap can be attached without interfering with the bodywork when towed from the rear.

Keep us informed when released, I would be interested in that.

You can purchase the straps for the front end of the car from someone that sells towing and hold down straps. Call and ask for Doug Tomorrow 817-267-4451 Have patience we have phone problems that seem to arise from no where. I will brief him this afternoon. al
