If you want to strip the paint I would reccomd using a high quality aircraft paint stripper A plane is usually painted with Imron paint which is chip resistant and very tough. Alan The Stable.

Hi all,
Question regarding painting the channel under front hood where the rubber weatherstrip lays in. The whole channel gets painted body color but at the inner lip of channel does the paint go over on into the underside or is this area painted black? Hopefully you can understand my question.
Hard to tell looking at Willhoit's restoration photos. Seems to me the paint would just terminate when the whole channel space is painted.

Forgot to ask about gas tank removal for paint. Is this not the way to go? Do some people leave tank in place and masking protects from over spray?
That's part of my above question. If body color paint goes over the edge down from channel the rubber gasket sits in under hood then yes tank needs to come out. If not, perhaps the tank can stay in place right?

If you are stripping the car to bare metal, do it right or you will regret it for the rest of your life.

Of course, the tank needs to come out. Everything you leave in the chassis will get dirtied. That is one reason why you upholster after paint. With a lot of wrapping and care maybe you can leave the wiring harness.

Hi all,
Today after about nine weeks 84832 saw the light of day and went to local body shop. Likely will stay there about five months.
Question about original type exhaust where the two straight pipes exited thru the holes in the rear over rider upright guards.
Is there a exhaust made now that will do this considering this '66 912 motor? What Mfg, originally made this exhaust type?
Looking at gently used Dansk that Wilhoit has but he says pipe will exited out the side of the car which is fine but perhaps if possible I want to make it look more correct thru bumper guards.
BTW, going from early hand built Gary Emory stinger from mid 1980's, loud and obnoxious. What will I give up with Dansk compared to Bursch etc? John says fitment should not be an issue with the Dansk as I had heard they had this issue a bit.Dansk needs J pipes.
John says straight pipes in the bumper guards were not factory.... WTF?

J pipes would be factory, but straight pipes would only have exited under the body, VW style, on a slightly earlier car than yours. The 912 engine fits to the muffler exactly the same as the original engine.

Getting rid of the stinger, all you’ll lose is the noise and a slight lack of low-end torque. I bet you’ll love having a factory style exhaust.

I think John saying the Dansk will exit out one side is a misunderstanding.

Is this Dansk muffler OEM for 1600cc ‘58 356A?
If so wouldn’t the two straight pipes then exit thru the bumper guard holes?

That’s the correct muffler but the s pipes have another 5-6” to go on each side to match the bumper guard spacing.

I think that’s the right muffler, unless the outlets are lower than they are supposed to be. I’m not sure how many versions they make for an A.

Try to find an original Leistritz to avoid the installation headaches the Dansk will inevitably give you. They simply do not fit.

Hope you are taking the dash cover out before paint?

You have any Leeds on a Liestritz exhaust?
Who makes good reproductions?
This exhaust with S pipes and then straight pipes will exit out the holes in bumper guards?
Which other brands will do the same and install without issues?

You need a stock A muffler with the exhaust holes further apart than on a B/C car and the short S pipes. Only correct for a T2.

None of the aftermarket both look and fit correctly. You have the option of getting one that looks correct and does not fit or one that looks wrong but slides right on.

Leistritz NOS or good used are very hard to find. I wish I had lead, I would have jumped on it myself!

The S pipes go into the funnels in the bumper guards without touching them. No straight section.
Eiseman (sp) or Porsche factory ones are reputed to look stock and fit, and cost a lot. Jules, is that correct?
Newish production Dansk are said to fit but crack pretty soon.

The one shown above is for a T1 - that is why they look like they are coming out on the bottom of the muffler.
you need the T2 version,, for the reasons as above.
