Plating colors on a 65 engine

#1 Post by Richard Alexander »

I guess some of you have rebuild a C/SC engine authentic and correct.

Is there a list with correct colors (silver, yellow and sometimes black)? Pictures would be appreciated as well.

Thank you

Richard

See if this factory photo helps. No yellow cad used on the 356 engine. 912's and early 911's.

And with 912/911, 1967 was the transition year to yellow (#2) with earlier models still using the 356 clear (#1). 67 models had various levels of substitution, but by end-of-year production cars were (almost) entirely #2 on chassis with an occasional engine showing some old #1 pieces here and there. As always, given it is Porsche, some people might know of exceptions.

Great additional info, Jim. To paraphrase your last sentence, "Porsche...consistently inconsistent..."

I am no plating expert but you need to know that the chemicals used today are not the same as what was used in the 64/65 time frame. Good luck getting Cad 1 plating done now. Many feel Silver Zinc (Clear zinc) plating was actually used where many say Cad 1. viewtopic.php?t=53482&hilit=Cad+vs+zinc+plating

Good points, Doug. In the parts manuals, some parts are identified as galvanized (zinc).

Stoddard used to sell paint of the correct colors in rattle cans. Alan The Stable.

Correct as did others. I panted my disc brake calipers with "Yellow Cad" paint No it won't wear as well as yellow Zinc plated but it sure looked nice when I mounted them.
